backup across the network

Thread needs solution

If the USB drive is local The backup works fine.

Marcof,

This would be hard to troubleshoot in this forum across your network.  I'd first check to make sure that both computers are not set for any type of powermanagement, sleep, hibernation, etc when the backup is running.  You also want to check the advanced power management ot make sure the disks are not set to turn off after a period of time.  Then make sure the NIC and USB ports are not set with power management in DEVICE Manager either.

Once that's ruled out, make sure you are using physical connections on your network and not wireless - is that any better?  Not sure how you're connected now so I'm guessing.

If using physical network connecitons, try replacing the cables with different ones.

What is your home router/switch?  IF it is older, it may be choking on the large internal backups files if it's running out of CPU or memory.

Is your home router/switch on the latest manufacturer's firmware as well?

What other type of network transfers are going on during backups (media streaming, downloads, etc).  Try disabling those.

I would suggest downloading LanSpeetTestLite (free) and test a large file copy (1GB) with it from the source PC to a share on the destination PC and see how long it takes.  While that's going, and/or your backup is going across the network, open a command prompt and run a steady ping to the other system to see if you are getting slow transfers and/or dropped packets

ping -t (ip address of your remote computer) will keep the ping going

Marcof,

When you set up your backup task, does the USB drive show up as a network folder or as a drive letter?  If it shows as a network folder, you could map it to a drive letter, then use the drive letter in ATI 2016 as the destination.  Also, when selecting the drive (or folder) in ATI2016, does ATI request log in credentials?  A screen capture that shows the destination would help.

Do you get any error messages?

Does ATI reboot to complete the backup?  It should not have to reboot to complete the backup.

to FTRPilot:

yes I get a fatal error message I attached a picture of it.

I map the drive as a drive letter , but that made no difference.

Checking with explore on the other machine , no file was created.

To Bobbo. I am using wireless, but it is very fast wireless new BT HUB5. I have not done the speed test yet. It is my home nobody else here using the network

Marcof,

When you created the task, did ATI request log in credentials?

You may want to create another task.  When you select the destination, you can type in the name of the computer where the USB drive is attached in the following format:

\\ComputerName\

The hit the right carat at the end of the input line...see picture below.  It may take 10 or 15 seconds, but ATI should popup a window for log in credentials.  The credentials is the login name and password if you were sitting at the computer where the USB drive is attached.

Let us know if this works.

ok, if if enter the destination and then enter the right carat and then test the connection by enter the credential , the credentials are ok ,

but then from there is no other option then cancel , no option to go back to the menu to start the backup

if I select the drive from the network tree  ( without entering the credentials at that point) it just waits for very long time   and then evetually is selected..

statrt the backup and fails again

the speed test came up with 15 mbit /sec to that folder ( bits not bytes). even if it works it will take a long time

Marco,

Instead of testing credentials, hit the connect button.  After that, you should be able to navigate to the folder you are going to use for the backup, using ATI.  Click on that folder and there should be an OK button.

At 15Mbps you can forget running a multi GB  backup.  You have problems with your wireless connection.  There could be numerous issues at cause.  Get those problems sorted and you might have better luck with TI 2016  A solid wireless connection should run at least 150Mbps.

I have to agree with Enchantech on the speed and that's why I alluded to using LanSpeedTest.  I'm not sure why you're getting such slow speeds - even with a nice wireless router and no other devices connected to it, it could actually be the wireless adapter in your PC that is the limiting factor... plus distance from the AP, interference, reflection, etc.  15Mb/s on the internal LAN is pretty abysmal - are you using a an old G adapter or something on the PC and/or located more than 50 feet from the AP and/or with walls between?  If nothing else, you may want to invest in a newer wireless AC USB adatper for your system to try out and see if that improves speed performance if it is just not possible to hardwire it to the network for the purpose of backups.

i connect the laptop server via cable and  with explorer I can transfer 400mbyte file in 51 sec that makes it 62 Mbit/sec (In the directory I want to use for backup) . I also disabled virus protection just in case, but the backup does start . after a few seconds reports the same error

It looks like an access privilege problem for the process that produces the backup. What are the security settings on the network share? Is it accessible to any user on the network?

we are along  the right lines here. I logon as Administrator instead of my regular user and the backup now is started ( it will take 4 or 5 hours to finish writing the 60Gb ). The user that did not work on the client machine does not have a matching user on the server machine. even though the security was set for everyone...

Sound like you got it sorted out.  Security permissions in Windows 10 are going to require a learning curve for users as you have now discovered.

yes windows 10 sharingg is a bit of a discovery journey. following windows 10 forum advice ( TG there are Forums!) I had to delete the HOMEGROUP in all the PCs re-add it . Also you cannot share an entire drive but just individual directories..  Got it sorted now ! Speed is quite acceptable now, since I moved the server to cable.

Noticed that in Acronis 2016 the backup is half the size ( Some kind of better compression ??!)

Default compression should be about 70% of the original backup size. I would test a recovery to another drive to truly validate though. It won't backup things like hiberfile, page file, temp, etc. which count as large space in use on the C drive. Other .tib backups that may live there could be excluded too in your resulting backup. The size of your recovery partition will play into the size as well... I have an HP that has a 12Gb one but I keep it so I can revert to factory... Just in case. Be sure to check the exclusion tab as well in your script but be aware that changes to a script after it has run can cause issues... Like resetting the existing version chain count.
