Backup Dateinamen

Thread needs solution

Was bedeuten eigentlich die ganzen Buchstaben/Zahlenkombinationen im Dateinamen?

Beispiel: Kompletter PC (USER-PC)täglich_full_b9_s1_v1.tib
also b9 und s1 und v1?

Bei inkrementellen Backups zählt das s immer eins rauf, aber sonst habe ich  keine Systematik erkennen können.

What the whole letter / number combinations actually mean in the file name?

Example: Complete PC (USER PC) täglich_full_b9_s1_v1.tib
So b9 and s1 and v1?

Incremental backups that always counts s one up, but otherwise I do not see any classification.

Hans Jurgen, please see the ATIH 2016 User Guide: Backup file naming

Backup file naming

A backup file name has the following attributes:

  • Backup name.
  • Backup method (full, inc, diff: full, incremental, differential).
  • Number of backup chain (in the form of b#).
  • Number of backup version (in the form of s#).
  • Number of volume (in the form of v#).

    For example this attribute changes when you split a backup into several files. Refer to Backup splitting for details.

Thus a backup name may look the following way:

  1. my_documents_full_b1_s1_v1.tib
  2. my_documents_full_b2_s1_v1.tib
  3. my_documents_inc_b2_s2_v1.tib
  4. my_documents_inc_b2_s3_v1.tib

If you are creating a new backup, and there is already a file with the same name, the program does not delete the old file, but adds to the new file the "-number" suffix, for example, my_documents_inc_b2_s2_v1-2.tib.

hi Steve, thanks so lot again.

What is the meaning of "backup chain"?

Hans-Jurgen, a backup version chain is the set of backup images that comprises of a full backup plus X number of incremental or differential backup files, where all of these files will have the same backup number:

Example:
MyBackup_full_b1_s1_v1  }
MyBackup_inc_b1_s2_v1  }
MyBackup_inc_b1_s3_v1  }
MyBackup_inc_b1_s4_v1  } = 1 backup chain assuming you have defined to create a new full backup after creating 3 incremental backups.

Steve, thank you for your explanations. But now another question is: If I make a new backup to the same external hard drive to another location with the same settings as an existing backup, why the new backup will not start because of b1 but with e.g. b8? A newly added backup would begin but with b1, right?

Hans-Jürgen, I would expect to see a new backup with _full_b1_s1_v1 provided that the backup name is unique and has not been used before.  If you are seeing _full_b8_s1_v1 then this would suggest that you have used the backup task name before and it is remembered by the Acronis Database and hence it regards this backup as number 8 for this task in your example.

hi Steve, that is possible. Thank you again and again :-)

hi Steve, I have a new external drive and the backup name is unique. I am sure that I never used that name before (the letter of the drive is a new one and the backupname starts with that letter). The name of the backup-file is: Q_Neu_USB_30_Kompletter PC (USER-PC)_full_b3_s1_v1.tib. As you see it has b3????? How can I begin a new backup on another external drive that has no connections to existing backups then? In the userguide is written that if I want to start a new one I have to click on the "+" (Backup hinzufügen) and I then could select "Neues Backup erstellen" but that doesn't work. If I click on the "+" there is no option "Neues Backup erstellen". I'm frustrated :-(

Hans-Jürgen, this is puzzling as to why your unique new backup should be given _full_b3_ and I have to confess that I do not have an answer for why this should be unless there is some issue with the Acronis Database files at work here?

In terms of clicking on "+" to add a new backup, I have never seen any additional option shown to create a new backup, it just does this by creating a new backup task name at the top of the list of tasks and presenting the Source and Destination selection panels, with these being defaulted to Source = Entire PC and Destination = Acronis Cloud.

The only other option in that area is by clicking on (V) for Add existing backup which will let you select a .TIB image file.

You could try deleting or renaming the Acronis Database folder and letting the application recreate this and the files within when you next launch it, but you would also need to remove your new backup task Q_Neu_USB_30_Kompletter PC (USER-PC) and move the .TIB file if you want this to start the sequence with _full_b1_  as otherwise the _b3_ would be found and trigger the backup to continue from there.

All Acronis Services and Processes need to be ended in order to delete or rename the Database folder due to application locks otherwise.
