Backup Mechanics

Thread needs solution

Trying to understand how TI 2016 works. I have set up a custom backup scheme. full and only 2 differential then new full etc. I have clean up set so only 2 versions are kept. My media shows first full with four entires three of which are the same size then two diffs of varying size. When the second full is run (by scheduler) The next full series is started.  BUT the old first full still shows on the B/U media but only one entire BU icon shows in Acronis. Must I manually delete the first full B/U from the media? I have somewhat limited space on my USB zip drive. I thought the disk cleanup would automatically delete the old first full and related diffs?

Darryl,

It would be helpful if you could post some screen shots showing both your custom backup scheme settings and also the resulting backup image files (.TIB) on your backup drive.

ATIH automatic cleanup works on complete version chains only, where the definition of a version chain = an initial full backup image plus any defined incremental or differential backup images.

A version chain is only considered to be complete when the first full backup of the next version chain has been successfully created.

If you have set the cleanup rules to keep 2 version chains, then the cleanup will not remove the oldest version chain until the full backup for the third version chain has been created successfully.

Please note that manually deleting backup versions will cause Acronis to complain about missing version files unless you also run a Validation to reconcile the deleted versions with the information that Acronis stores in its database files.

The Acronis GUI will only show you the Backup Task that was used to create the backup versions - to see the actual versions that have been created, you need to start the Recover options for that backup task, i.e. Recover disks or Recover files, which will then present you with a selection box from which to choose the particular Backup version by date / time from.  There is no reference to the actual backup file name, only to the date & time when the backup version was created.
