Backup settings in Acronis TI 2016

Thread needs solution

Since going to Acronis TI 2016 from Acronis TI 2015, I noticed when doing an Entire PC backup, the list of Exclusions in the Options has increased. There used to be only three:  *.tib, *.tmp, and one other. In the 2016 version, there are several additional files I do not understand to be be excluded. I would have thought almost every file would be included in an Entire PC with option of having a Custom Backup Scheme, and the Backup Method Full. Is there a way to delete some of these files to be excluded if they should really be backed up? The 6027 and the new 6559 versions both have these additional files to be excluded.

Hello Charles,

There are certainly some extra exclusions added to the list shown in options and some that I remove because I do not want them to be excluded!

System Volume Information = All your Windows System Restore points.  If you have setup System Protection then these are now excluded by default!

A lot of browser data is also excluded by default, which for such as Google Chrome will lose all your bookmarks, extensions etc.

To remove any of the set exclusion settings, click and highlight the line, then click on the [-] button below the list.

If you want to keep your updated set of exclusions, click on the Save as default button at the bottom.  You can also use this same button to save your default Email Notifications settings.

Thanks for your response. I better do another backup and delete many of the exclusions listed as you discribed.

This may be a dumb question, but if I remember correctly, there was a (-) and a (+) button. If the Highlighted item goes away using the (-), when do I use the (+) button?

Thanks for you interest and response. I really appreciate it.

Charles,

On the Exclusions page tab, you can use the [+] button if you want to add a new exclusion, i.e. you want to omit all scanned documents of type TIFF, you could add an exclusion for *.TIFF to your list.  Clicking on the [+] button opens an edit field at the bottom of the exclusions list where you can either type in, or with a Disks / Partitions backup, use the [...] on the right end of the edit field to navigate to a particular drive or folder or file to be excluded.  For Files & Folders backups, you can only type in manually and not navigate to a specific place - the reasoning being that you can exclude specific folders from the Source selection page instead.

Steve,

Thanks again for your response. The fact I only do full PC Backups, I will probably just let everything backup except the ones that were excluded in Acronis TI 2015. I will have to evaluate how much more external drive space is used without the larger exclusion list. I just want to be sure I can restore everything I may need to get back to the last good running machine. It would be a bummer if something I really need is excluded.

I still have Acronis TI 2015 running on my backup Windows 7 machine. I aleady have the license to upgrade it to the 2016 level. I did not want to upgrade the backup machine until I know my primary machine is working correctly. On the backup machine, I will have to delete the 2015 version via the system control panel first. I was afraid to use the Acronis cleanup routine after reading it may cause other problems that would require a restore. I don't know why I can never find detailed information in the Acronis TI users guide. This is why I appreciate people like yourself to keep me out of trouble.

Charles, just be careful using the defaults if you do value your browser favorites and use browsers other than IE - those will not be backed up with the default exclusions.

I'm on the fence about "system volume information"  I have been removing them in my exclusions to get them in my backups and have been able to restore from a backup and then use Microsoft's System Protection to restore a VSS snapshot so it does seem to work (hence why I have been removing that exclusion to preserve them).  However, Acronis engineers have reported in other threads that  this normally does not work this way, but if it is possible (even if it doesn't) I'd still prefer to keep them.  The offline bootable recovery media backs up everything by default anyway and that is normally my preferred recovery to use.  To each their own though, but justed wanted to point these out as Steve already did too.
