Backup Settings missing or cannot be changed

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis True Image 2016 running on Windows 10.

Over the past few weeks I've noticed that for several, but not all, of my existing backups the Settings appear to have been lost.   i.e. in the list of backups the usual "Files and Folders" and "Custom Destination" are shown, but I cannot edit these, nor is the "Options" button available.   The context menu shown by right-clicking on the backup name no longer shows the "Clone Settings" entry.   See attached screen shot if needed.

1.  Any ideas on why this happens?

2.  Is there a way to restore the settings from the backup file itself?  This file is present and validates successfully.

3.  Is there any way to export the settings so at least I don't have to recreate these backup settings every time I use it - there are many files/folders so it's a time consuming exercise.

Thanks.

Grayman, welcome to these user forums.

The one thing that stands out for me from your screen shot image is that you have a Reconfigure button instead of a Backup Now button - this suggests that Acronis does not recognise the selected task as being a complete / valid task yet, hence it is not offering you the Options button or clone settings from the drop-down menu area.

I would recommend clicking on Reconfigure and ensuring that the Source and Destination settings are set correctly, you will then also get the Options button back to give access to the Schedule, Backup, Notification etc pages.

There is no direct way to import or export task settings from a backup task, however, task configuration is stored in an XML file in the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder in files with a .TIS extension type - you can determine which XML file is for which task by looking inside the text file and finding the task name near the top of the file.

One thing that can cause problems in this area are any changes in drive letters or in drive UUID values - UUID's can change as a result of Windows 10 upgrades to new builds when a new Recovery partition is created to allow for regression.

Steve,

Thanks for this info - I was previously unaware of .TIS files so it's very helpful.

It appears that there is no .TIS file for the backup in question.  As you suggested, I clicked on Reconfigure which showed that there were no source files configured (not surprisingly if the .TIS file is missing).   I was however able to restore the .TIS file from a different backup image and now all is well, so presumably there are no drive letter or UUID issues.

I don't know how I managed to delete the .TIS file, but I'm surprised that the settings info cannot be recovered from the associated .TIB file.  It would surely make sense to store the metadata used to create a backup along with the backup.  That way, even on a brand new installation, a user could just point Acronis TrueImage at a backup file and be able to resume operations.   Even if drive letters or other elements change, having access to the original settings would be useful.  Perhaps one for the future.

Thanks once again, you've resolved my issue.

Grayman, glad to hear your issue is sorted.

I would suggest submitting Feedback directly to Acronis using the tool in the GUI Help section, for the request to include the task configuration data with at least the initial full backup image of a version chain to enable the settings to be recovered if needed.

You may not have deleted the *.tis file; they can sometimes disappear when an ATI update is installed. I have had it happen a few times over the years.

Hi Ian,

Since I didn't previously know where the .tis files were located then I probably didn't explicitly delete them.  However, I've had to uninstall / install ATI a few times to deal with other issues (unfortunately quite common) so perhaps files were lost in the shuffle.

Thanks for your comment.  Also, as Steve Smith suggested I've submitted feedback to Acronis suggesting the the task config data be saved with the backup file.

Excellent, the more people sho askfor this the more likely it is that it will happen.
