Backups are created more than once

Thread needs solution

I have a situation where I have 3 backup tasks set up. They backup to a NAS. What is happening is that every time I edit a backup task to change the location of where it saves the files, it causes the backup to be create multiple times (duplicated) based on how many times I have edited the backup job. So when a backup task runs I can end up with 2 or more copies of the same backup saved onto the NAS which is filling up fast.

This got to the point where i had to uninstall Acronis and reinstall to clear this behaviour but i had to recently reset the save locations and it is doing it again.

I can't see anywhere in the user interface that enables or diables this behaviour?

Thanks.

Andrew, welcome to these user forums.

Editing existing tasks is known to have various side effects that include resetting version chain counts but I have not heard of this particular one of creating multiple duplicated backups on the destination drive.

What backup scheme are your tasks using?  Also what type of changes are you making in terms of the backup location?

The recommended method of effecting this type of change is to use the option to 'clone settings' for the task to be changed, this will result in a new task with the same name but prefixed with (1) to be created.  You can then make any changes to this new cloned task, including renaming it (delete the original one before trying to use the same name).  The key benefit of using this method is that it keeps the Acronis Database updated with the new task details and cleans up the details of the deleted task to keep things tidy.

Cheers Steve, I am just reseting the save location on the task and that creates the issue. I have just upgraded to 2017 but it still does this. From now on I will do as you suggest and c;one the task first. The scheme is Keep 4 full backups only, so no incremental stuff.

Seems like a bug that should be fixed however.

Andrew, could you post a screenshot of the resulting backup files so we can see the names and dates?  Are you positive they are multiple instances of the same backup being repeated?  Perhaps they are actually a single backup that has been split into multiple parts (the default is best size, but Acronis will split if need be do to FAT32 formatting, or trouble writing to the destsination).  Also, when there are connectivity issues across the network, it may fail to complete a good backup, but not clean up and then it will use the same name and end up appedning a number to the name since it already exists (-1, -2, -3).  A screenshot would help clarify a little bit.

Additionally, I would suggest grabbing MVP FTRPilot's logviewer and look at some of the recent service.logs after such changes are made and a backup is run to see if it provides any additional information such as a network failure or a permission issue or something like that.  You can post some of your logs here too for extra review (they have no personal information in them - only the name of the backup task and the name of the source folder and destination folder).
