When starting Volume-Backup TI freezes: VSS,Error 12289,

It is also possible to disable VSS usage for a particular backup task without touching Windows VSS service itself:

1) open the folder where your backups settings are saved: C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts

2) each file there stores settings for particular backup job. Open files one-by-one in Notepad, or open latest modified file (if you have just modified your task), until you find the one that has backup name on 5th line, e.g. MyBackups

3) click Edit - Replace and replace use_vss="true" with use_vss="false"

4) save changes and close the file

Thanks,

Hi Slava,

Thankyou for this workaround, which works fine!

It is only a little bit troublesome and I think that Acronis should do something, because it seems that there are more users with this problem and Trueimage isn't a freeware!

Thanks

Richard

Hello richard,

I have a question.  Are you running Apple Bootcamp on your machine?

What language version of Windows are you using?

I am posting link to a solution below:

http://www.eassos.com/how-to/fix-error-code-0x80070057.php

Please follow Solution number 2 to start with as I believe that it will fix your problem, is the easiest to perform, and will answer your question about language.

If Solution 2 does not work and you do not mind working in Windows Registry then you may wish to try Solution 1.

Hi,

I tried solution 2/ change the komma to a dot, but didn't work.

So I added the registry D-Word CopyFileBufferedSynchronousIo, my PC stopped to work!

Only the workaround with VSS-disable in the Script works, but is not really comfortable.

Thanks for your help

Richard

Thanks for trying it out, sorry it did not work for you.  If I come across anything else I'll let you know.

richard,

Please be advised that this Forum is simply a user Forum and is not an official Support channel for the True Image product.  If you desire Acronis Support you would need to request that using the Support link found at the top of this page.

Since the offered solution did not work for you I would recommend that you first check your hard disk for erors using Windows chkdsk.  I would also recommend that you run Windows System File Checker.  Links provided below for using these tools:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/guide-to-using-check-disk-…

http://www.howtogeek.com/222532/how-to-repair-corrupted-windows-system-…

VSS is problematic on many systems and for a number of different reasons.  It can be corrupt or malfunctioning completely outside of Acronis or other backup products.  However, most backup products rely on VSS to be working correctly in Windows in order to be able to use this backup service as well.

Although there are many possibilities as to why VSS is not working on a particular system, I'm going to take a stab and see if we can try something easy as a test since you have modified the partitions manually with a 3rd party tool, which may have had negative consequences for "System Protection" settings on the local machine as those changes may not have been updated there after the paritions change with Paragon.

*** WARNING - we are going to disable System Protection... this WILL delete restore points, so please be aware.  However, we are going to turn them back on and you can create a restore point as soon as we do again (if you want).  Just know that proceeding will delete existing restore points on the system***

1) Right click on my computer >>> properties.

2) Click on "system protection"

3) Under "protection settings"  and the listed available drives.  Is the C: drive listed? Does system protection show "on".  Does it show more than one instance of C: drive by any chance?

4) Click on the "configure" button

5) Disable System Protection. Click Apply.  Make note of the warning that restore points will be lost and accept them

MAKE an additional note if you get any errors or warnings - I just did on a problem machine, but there's nothing you can do, just make note if you do and OK.

6) Change Max usage to 20% or less.  20% is more than plenty.  I usually select 10%.  The amount of free space on your hard drive and the size of your hard drive really determines how much space you want to use for restore points and  "restore previous versions" ability of modified files and folders in Windows.

Note - if you drive is nearly full, you don't want to set this very high. Over-allocating system restore space can be problematic on its own.

7) Click OK. Don't skip this - just to make sure it commits the changes.

8) IF you had two versions of C drive listed under "protection settings" before, you should now only see 1 and it should show protection "off".   If you only had one C: drive (as you normally should) it should still show protection "off".

9) Click on "configure" again

10) "Turn on system protection".  Check your max usage again (just to be sure).  Again, make sure it is no more than 20%, but 10% is usually ideal (plus the size you set should also take into consideration the amount of free space left on the hard drive - if you don't have much space, and you've overallocated- that could be part of the problem).

11) Click Apply.  Click OK.

12) Protection settings should now show the 1 C: drive with protection "on"

13) Click "create" to create a new restore point as a test and it's just good to have one again since we deleted them all by turning protection off a few moments ago.

14) Reboot the machine for good measure.  After reboot, try running your backup with VSS enabled and see how it goes.

Here's a little more background on why this may help:

Awesome.  So, just to clarify, this did allow the backup to run to success without doing anything else in Acronis or the system regarding Volume Shadow Service?

Hallo,

sorry was my mistake.

It worked once, because in the old script vss was disabled.

Now the same problem again.

Best wishes

Richi

richard,

Have a look at Windows Event Logs for any VSS errors.  Any that you find look at the Details view and note the error codes shown then refer to the link below, it might shed some light on what the specific problem is.
