Bootable Media : 64 bit or not ?

Thread needs solution

Hello,

This is about Acronis True Image 2016.

After having registered my serial number in my online Acronis account, I have downloaded the Bootable Media ISO file, then I have burned it in a CD.

When booting the computer using that CD, I am asked to choose :
-Acronis True Image.
-Acronis True Image 64 bit.

As my Windows 10 is 64bit, does it mean I should choose "Acronis True Image 64 bit" ?
Or maybe the 64bit version is just a way to handle bigger disks ?

I don't find anything about that choice in the documentation.

What are the consequences of that choice ?

Thanks.

Hello, Alaini

If you use a 64-bit system and it does not use UEFI firmware, then you can use either one.

However, if your PC uses UEFI, you will need to use the 64-bit version. On the other hand, if you had a 32-bit machine, you would have needed to use the 32-bit version of True Image.

Hope this answers you question.

Hello Dmitry,

Thanks for your answer.

I will soon choose between UEFI (GPT) and BIOS Legacy (MBR), for my Windows 10 - 64bit installation.

So, let's sum up how I will use Acronis Bootable Media :

-If my Windows 10 64bit is UEFI / GPT, then I need to launch the Acronis CD using UEFI boot, then choose 64bit Acronis when asked.

-If my Windows 10 64bit is Legacy BIOS / MBR, then I need to launch the Acronis CD using Legacy BIOS boot, then choose any version of Acronis (64 bit or 32 bit).

Alaini

Yes, everything seems correct!

Hi Alaini

Is there any Special benefit you expect from using uefi for your WIN10 isntallation?
if you really can choose between UEFI and legacy bios i would go for legacy.

The legacy BIOS uses MBR, which is easily corrupted, and sometimes difficult to fix.
UEFI uses GPT with redundant data, so if something goes wrong, you can still use your computer.

I am trying to clone to a new SSD and it is maddening. I can't boot from the CD unless I disable the UEFI BIOS. I have tried over and over, all different ways. I feel at this point it is never going to work.

Sondra, try creating your Acronis Rescue Media on a USB stick instead of using a CD and this should allow you to boot from the USB media in UEFI mode.

Thank you I will consider if this CD doesn't work. The backup was created with the 2014 version, so I used that boot disk and I am cloning now. I hope the clone is good because the BIOS is in legacy mode. One issue is that this laptop had Windows 8 on it and the user was forced into Windows 10, so I am expecting more issues even if this clone is successful. I may run the factory image restore and bring it back to Win 8.

Sorry I mis-spoke. I am not using the backed up image. I am cloning directly from the old HDD, but the older version of the boot disk works better for whatever reason.
