Bootable media mouse and keyboard hanging.

Thread needs solution

Hey all.

So I just made a bootable media to recover a backup. I noticed on the home screen that my mouse seemed frozen, but my keyboard seemed to react. I tried to hit ctrl + M/F10 as suggested to activate the mouse and it worked, I could then click to start the program.

Now, on the restore menu (after that interminable loading) it seems like both my mouse and keyboard are stuck?

I've been trying to restore that comp for a while and it's so frustrating to be 1 step away from succeeding!

I use a pretty old mouse and keyboard (aren't even USB ahaha, its these very old connectors). Gonna try a usb mouse later and report. In the meanwhile, If anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it a lot.

Thanks.

Allan, welcome to these user forums.

There have been reports of issues with keyboard / mice when using bootable media but this has mainly been on very new systems, especially those needing to use a USB dock to connect devices etc.  There have also been problems when Samsung Magician has been used where Samsung SSD drives are involved.

From what you have posted, it sounds like you have older PS2 type keyboard and mouse connections, so trying a new USB Kbd & mouse may be the answer.

The other consideration here is to ensure that you are running with a recent build version of ATIH 2016 rescue media such as either #6571 or #6581 builds.  If you have a much older build, then recreate the rescue media to see if that makes any difference.

I have had issues with using the UEFI 64-bit bootable media on some systems with the default keyboard and mouse as well.  In most cases, using an external USB keyboard mouse will work.

In other cases, using the legacy mode of the media may work better as it defaults to teh 32-bit drivers.  The problem with using legacy mode if you have a UEFI system, comes when it's time to restore as you need to boot the recovery media in the mode that matches your OS for the restore process so the disk is restored with the proper partitioning.

The 3rd option is to create WinPE rescue media instead - Acronis has a WinPE option in the media builder when you launch Acronis.  It will prompt you to download and install the Windows ADK first - it's a big one, but very handy.  Download, install and when it asks whichoptions ot install, pick the first 3 (roughly 3.4Gb)

Allan, thanks for feeding back and glad to hear it is solved.
