[BUG] LINUX RECOVERY - Error in the Linux UEFI Bootloader when Universal Restore is included

Thread needs solution

ATIH 2016 b5518

There is a typo in the bootloader seletion menu when running the Linux recovery medium via UEFI.
obviously a CR is missing and so the 2nd entry overwrites the first one.

still present in b5586 but only if Universal restore is installed. Without universal restore the issue is gone in the UEFI loader.

this problem still exists in b5620 when universal restore is installed. Please fix the UEFI bootloader. Thank you very much!

Hi Karl,
do I understand correctly that at the moment the problem is present only if media is created by Acronis Universal Media Builder?
Thank you,

Yes that is correct Anna. When the Universal Media builder is not installed (Windows) the created Linux medium will have a correct UEFI loader. Please refer to the screenshot given.

Hi Karl,
thanks for clarification!

You are welcome. I have tested the bootmedium of b5634 this still exists.

I have tried to reproduce it with different builds, but everything seems to be fine, see UEFI-media.png

Karl, what version of Universal Restore do you have installed?

Hello Dmitry, thank you for looking into it. Your screenshot shows a situation like I would expect it.

Windows reports the installed version of UR 11.5.39004. Will there be updates to UR for every ATIH update?

I cannot find (a more recent) UR on the webpage at the moment: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/99225#comment-301236

Looks like the latest build is 39006. However, I have tried 39004 as well, with the same results (as on the screenshot from my previous comment).

Hello Dmitry,

so what else can cause this behaviour if you cannot reproduce it on your computer. I have an Asus Mainboard P8Z77-I WD Deluxe (lastest UEFI firmware).
Could it be really the mainboard causing this.

Please know that I still have other issues with ATIH when using the UEFI based ATIH bootloaders. Except ATIH everything regarding UEFI works fine so far (other bootable tools / sticks etc)

Bear in mind that the Asus user support is very unfriendly and pragmatic. Even if I can file a bug and prove it is one, there will unlikely be a response in form of an update. Imho the support is completely detached from the Asus BIOS / UEFI Development so even if they would be more cooperative they might not be even able to raise issues and get them fixed. Just my personal opinion and expierence.

Hello Dmitry,

I have tried to download the latest UR for ATIH 2016 with a little bit of a trick as UR is not available on the new download section.

https://www.acronis.com/my/products/registration/
^^ this will open the legacy Acronis webpage

I can login to my account here and will get all the download links (legacy style).
https://www.acronis.com/en-us/my/products/index.html

When I click on download for ATIH 2016 UR (https://www.acronis.com/en-us/my/download/?AcronisTrueImage2016_ur_en-U…) this will immediately redirect me to the login page again but I cannot login there anymore.

Karl,

I'm not really sure what can be causing this issue on your machine, but it seems unlikely that it would be caused by the motherboard model.

As to the issue with downloading the Universal Restore installer - what browser are you using? I can download the installer both from the new account page, and from the legacy account page.

Hello Dmitry,
I am using the recent version of Firefox. The problem that UR is not available in the new accoun page is now fixed. I have downloaded the recent version of UR from the new account page now and will make a new medium. I also had to reinstall my Windows so I have a complete clean installation with ATIH b5634 and UR.

Hello Dmitry, despite the fact I have a fresh installed Windows and ATIH 19.0.5634 with UR 11.5.39006 I can still reproduce the error with the missing Carriage Return in the menu.

I have also found a way to reproduce this long ago reported crash of the Linux Bootloader

I have updated the thread accordingly because it is offtopic here.

I was able to reproduce this issue on a different computer today (Lenovo G500s, BIOS FW 2.15)

Hi Karl,

we still have no luck trying to reproduce this problem in our lab. As far as I understood you faced the same problem already on two machines.

Is it possible to send me an .iso image (or all files from USB) of the bootable media that you are using?

Best regards,

Hello Anna,

I can fairly understand that. I cannot reproduce it either, except on my Asus Mainboard and this Lenovo Laptop.  Other mainboards with UEFI support I have tried do not have any issues. Strange enough.

Hi Karl,

there is an assumption, that the problem is caused by the inability of the particular UEFI implementations cannot process ASCII symbols correctly.

The first option in German translation is "64 Bit mit UEFI-Unterstützung" and apparently UEFI of the machines in questions cannot handle "ü".

Thank you,

Hello Anna,

this is an interesting news. If you could give me a patch for the linux bootloader we could try it by removing the german "Umlaut"  by the ascii conform equivalent "ue". Would be glad to test the behaviour on my machine.

Hello Anna,

I have created a new bootable usb stick and beforehand update ATIH to b6027 aswell as Acronis Universal Restore to 11.5.40010.

Unfortunately the issue does still exist. Have you elaborated if the problem could really be the german umlaut?

I'm not seeing it with boot media b5634 and 11.5.39004. I have an ASRock Z77 Extreme4 motherboard.

do you have an english or german installation of ATIH?

English, Sorry Karl, I misinterpreted the thread, it seems to be only realated to the German translation.

no problem :)

Hello Acronis,

I can reproduce also this issue on 2 different Asus Z77 Chipset mainboards, on a HP Laptop and Dell Laptop the problems does not exist.

Shall I request a fix from Asus?

bump. This problem is also very problematic. Shall I open an official support request rather, given there is quite no possibility but uploading screenshots in that case? I have tried other laptops with other intel and amd chipset but this Asus Z77 seem to be the evil one here.

I have contacted the ASUS Support Germany. The answer was plain: They do not support any other OS than Windows. In case I have any issues with UEFI (which I clearly see in the implementation as the error is mostly reproducible on my Z77 Asus boards) they feel not responsible but point me to Acronis Support.

Good news, Karl! I have finally managed to reproduce this on an ASUS UEFI motherboard and have reported the issue to the developers.

Thank you very very much!

Hello Dmitry, were you also able to reproduce any of the issues with the Linux UEFI bootloader issues I've posted here when you did your tests with the ASUS UEFI board?

Thank you again for looking into that in this regard.
