cannot copy tib file

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I am using - since many years - Acronis True Image in order to make a copy of partition C:

For security reasons I also make a copy of the tib file on an external memory. Since about a week, this does not work any longer. The file is copied, which takes 15 to 20 min, one sees that the file size of original and copy is the same,  and then a message is displayed: cannot copy ***.tib file. See attached file. No file is afterwards visible. I did not add any software recently.

Aage, welcome to these user forums.

How are you doing the copy of your tib file?  Is this from within the Acronis application using 'Reserve copy' or are you doing this using File Explorer with Copy & Paste?

What type of external memory are you copying to?  Is this a USB memory stick or an external hard drive?

What free space do you have on the external device?

Hello Steve Smith,

since more than 10 years, I have made a copy of my saved tib files to externally memories, so far without any problem. Normally I used the Total Commander, as it is so much more useful than the Windows Explorer. But using the latter, the same problem arises.

I have three partitions on my system:

C: the system, W10 and programs

D: Data

E: BackUps

My ACRONIS is configured to store the tib files on E. No problem there. But if I now try to copy the file from E: to an external drive (with a lot of free space) my  problem occurs. The same, if I try to copy the tib file to C:, or D: , always the same eror message pops up. Also, copying any other data shows no problem at all.

Was there a recent W10 update, which might have caused this problem?

Asks,

Aage

Aage, thank you for the further information.

If you are seeing this same error when attempting to copy the .tib files from your E: Backups drive to any of your other drives, i.e. C:, D: or your external drive, then it sounds more like a security program may be preventing this from being done?

The only time I have seen similar behaviour was with ATIH 2017 New Generation when Acronis Active Protection is enabled which prevents any activities with Acronis backup image files.

It may be worth looking in the Windows Event logs to see if there any entries from the times when you have tried to do the copy?

I am not aware of this being caused by any recent Windows 10 updates.

Hello Steve,

the culprit is my SOPHOS on access scan. If I deactivate it while writing the image, I have no problem copying the *.tib files.

Also, renaming a, say, jpg file in *.tib and then copying it presents no problem. This is still quite mysterious to me, but I have a work around. Aage

Aage, thanks for the update, glad to hear that you have found the reason why the copy was failing.  Security programs can be both a blessing and a nightmare at times, you want the protection they offer but at the same time, they can be over protective and get in the way of normal activities!
