Cannot find version

Thread needs solution

Hello

My TI 2016 says "cannnot find version 5" but its there und if I search and select it, still the same error.

I startet the pc with a recovery disc and got the next problem: My backup is on a NAS and with the bootable CD I cannot access the NAS (cannot access the network at all).

So, what can I do?

Thanks.

Gery, this type of error is normally caused by deleting files outside of ATI using Explorer which causes the information about backup files held in the Acronis database to get out of sync with the actual files held.

You should try to run a Validation for the backup task that created the files, then when this shows an error pop-up message for a missing file, take the Ignore option each time.

With regards to accessing your network and NAS from the Acronis bootable rescue media, you should be connected on a wired network connection as there is no real support for wireless network devices provided by the bootable media.  The alternative would be to copy the backup files needed for recovery to an external USB drive or connect the NAS directly by USB if possible.

Thanks so far. There was definitely no file deleted via explorer. The file is even still there (actually TI made 2 files). This error happend to me sometimes in the past und I solved it by creating a new backup job and deleting the old one. But this can not be the solution.

But ok, to fix the database I guess I have to do somehow using the rescue media. If I start the computer with this media, how can i connect to the NAS using the network environment. LAN is working,

Gery, the database is only an issue when using the Windows ATI GUI - it is totally ignored when you are booting from the Acronis rescue media, so if you are still getting this error about a missing file in that standalone environment (USB media booted) then there is an issue with files here.

Please can you post either an image or list of the backup files involved here.

Also if you see this from the Windows ATI GUI, can you post a copy of the log file(s) where the error is reported.  Use the MVP Log Viewer tool to get to the Windows logs.  The rescue media also creates a log but you would need to save this before you leave the offline environment to the USB stick or hard disk.

The file is even still there (actually TI made 2 files).

A screenshot would be good - is it 2 separate files or is it the same name, but with a -1 or -2 at the end of the name?  That usually indicates the drive went offline (the destination usually) and failed, but left a partial so Acronis started again, using the same name, but had to append a new ending since the file name was already in use.  If the network is slow or unstable to the NAS, this is more likely to occur as the backup disconnects when the network drops and then has to start over.

As for the rescue media connecting to the NAS - how are you connecting?  I've never had much luck using the Nas or network option in Acronis rescue media GUI.  Instead, I tend to just start typing in the NAS share in the .tib file name path... such as

\\192.168.1.100\AcronisBackups <enter>

of course your NAS IP and backup share name will be different, but once you hit enter, it should prompt for credentials and hopefully connect once you enter them correctly.

You can also do this in A43.exe file explorer which is a tool in The Acronis folder on the rescue media - this is another reason I prefer the Windows PE recovery over the Linux rescue media, especially if you build it with the MVP custom tool since it will give you a nice file explorer to get to it quickly and easily.

Thanks for answering.

The network is not the problem, some strange things happened anyway. The backup started 2h later as in the schedule and it ended with 2 versions (…v1 and …v2).  But I don't care about that. I only want to delete the broken backup out of the database. Is it really that **** complicated?

Meanwhile I don't know anymore how to connect to the NAS. I tried the rescue media stick with another PC (one with LAN connector) and it worked quite easy. After typing the IP (not even the whole path) it connected.

My productive PC only has WLAN built in. OK, not supported by Acronis. So I tried to connect it with the official LAN adapter but did not work. Starting rescue media, networks environment is listed (it's not if there is no LAN connected), but it doesn't connect (nothing happens).

USB to NAS is not supported by the NAS.

Question 1: Is there another way to connect to the Acronis database to add or delete backup versions, instead of using rescue media?

Question 2: How can I get a backup of a whole Volume from the NAS to the PC, in case I will ever need it?

Gery, the internal Acronis database is never involved when using the bootable rescue media.  There are no tools apart from ATI itself for adding / removing data from the database.

If you are being told that the Acronis rescue media cannot find a version, then there is a file issue here that is unrelated to any information held in the internal database.

If you can access the NAS from another computer on your network, from Windows or otherwise, then you could simply copy the whole volume backup files to an external USB drive.

The only other method is to resolve the issues with connecting from this computer from the rescue media to the NAS.

Meanwhile I don't know anymore how to connect to the NAS. I tried the rescue media stick with another PC (one with LAN connector) and it worked quite easy. After typing the IP (not even the whole path) it connected.

So is the problem PC only connecting wirelessly?  This is likely the issue.  Drivers and wireless in rescue media can be dicey.  If you need wireless support, you need to build WinRE rescue media (linux default rescue can sort of work, but drivers are limited, WinPE does not support wireless by default, but WinRE does).

If you only have a system without a NIC, then a USB to ethernet adapter may be worth investing in - they can be had on Amazon for roughly $10 and can be worth their weight in gold.

Also, when you build WinRE, try using the MVP custom tool.  You will get some extras in the build such as a GUI file explorer (direct access to both Explorer++ and A43 file explorer with a GUI).  You also get a tool called PENetwork, which can help you validate that the wireless device is active and that it can see your wireless network SSID and verify that you are able to connect once you enter the login information and that you've received an IP address.

HOWEVER... keep in mind though that wireless is not ideal for backups - simply because of the large data being passed wirelessly and instability of wireless networks from data saturation, interference, etc.  It can and does work fine for some, but any time you can physically connect to a network, you greatly increase the performance and reliability of the connection and will likely have a better experience.
