Can't create bootable USBs

Thread needs solution

I'm new to this and stumbling around.
A couple weeks ago I made "bootable rescue media" and "universal restore media" successfully
I wanted to make another set to store in a safe deposit box away from the house
I got new USB drives
When I go through the process to make the media the USB drive is not selectable
the USB drive is mounted. I was able to format it. I can write to it and read from it.
But Acronis seems not to see it at all.
I have the latest update as of 17 September

It may be that Acronis doesn't like the way the drive is formatted. You usually can't go wrong if you format the drive as Fat32.

It can also be that the flash drives themselves are at fault. Some drives refuse to be recognized by the application. Thsi has been attributed to the way in which they report themselves to Windows. If a flash drive reports itself as a fixed drive rather than a removable drive that drive will not be recognized as a valid target for boot media creation. SanDisk drives are somewhat notorious for this.

I did exactly what the user guide said - at the point of selecting the type of media to create the USB was not an option.

That was the trick. My brand-new fancy-pants Sandisk drives are not recognized by Acronis. The cheapo Staples brand works fine.

But when I created the Microsoft Recovery drive the Sandisk drives worked fine. I say it's an Acronis issue and not a Sandisk issue. But I can work around it so that's OK.

The issue is not restricted to Acronis ATI. We first worked out what was going on during beta testing of either ATI 2014 or ATI 2015; I noticed that the USB drive was not being reported as a removable device for some Sandisk USB sticks. I made this discovery via DirectoryOpus (my file manager of choice). I have a dim recollection that they are also reported as non-removable in Windows Explorer. The same thing happens with my WD Eelements 3TB USB 3 external drives and my Seagate USB 3 4TB Extension (the latter are recognised as external by Acronis as they are, together with my 4TB HGST 4 TB USB 3 but not by Windows).
