Can't edit Connection Settings

Thread needs solution

Have somehow lost a connection to my network share.  Was working this morning.  I can validate my backup, but I can't back anything up.

was expecting an "Edit Connection Settings" link in the error message or something.

Can access the drive and files with Windows Explorer.

Any ideas?

Tried creating a new Backup and am still getting the connection error.

Here is a clearer screenshot of the error message:

Getting nervous...  This network drive needs a backup!  Can access it in all the normal ways, but ATI fails.

Please help, and thank you.

What happens when you click on 'Open location' or if you try to reselect the same Network Destination (click on the Destination for the task)?

If you can validate your backup task, then your connection settings should be good, so there may be a different issue here?

Have you looked at the messages posted in the back task log?  Use the MVP Log Viewer to check these - link below.

Hi, Steve!

The Destination is a USB external drive.  The Source is the network share: \goflex_home\personal\...  And as expected, Open Location takes you to the USB drive where the .tib resides.

It could be an issue with the goflex_home server, I guess.

Can't find a link to download MVP Log Viewer.  Is this a Google Drive only file?  If so, I'll have to install software to access it.

Thank you.

z

z. you can download the MVP Log Viewer from here  (Updated 18/06)

Z, sorry if I posted the wrong link - long day = senior moment!  Correct link updated.

No worries!  I was happy to have a fresh copy of the CleanupTool.  In the past, those have been ATI-version specific.  What flavor is the one you linked, if you remember?

After running a disk-check on the server's hard drive and correcting eight unreadable sectors, I re-ran the backup.  It failed same as before.  Ran the LogViewer.  Here is the Short log view:

I would've attached the above as a text file, but don't see that functionality in the new forum interface.  Did I miss it?

thanks,

z

I have a spare server for this setup and I swapped it in, setup all the user IDs / pw and other settings.  Started ATI, verified the source file selection and ran the backup.  Failed again.  Checked MVPLogViewer and exact same result as above.

Pretty sure it's not the server!

All other ATI backups work, btw.  It's only this one whose source is the network share.  Rather important, though.  This is where all the docs, photos, &c reside for two busy users.

Stumped,

z

Created a new backup of the personal folders from NAS, this time changing the destination drive from the USB external to an internal HD.  No joy, same flavor.

Curious that ATI did not ask me for credentials to the NAS when setting up the task.  Yes, I have a credential stored in Windows 7 for the NAS.

Z, strange that this problem is only affecting the NAS backups.

Out of interest, what happens if you try to backup a local folder to the NAS (rather than backing up from the NAS)?

The log is rather mystic at times but in essence looks to be still complaining about the NAS credentials.

Ref the Cleanup tool, as per my signature, the current tool covers 2010 to 2017 versions - this can be seen if you start to run the tool in the initial panels.

Thanks for Cleanup tool notes. <embarrassed>  Very cool that it covers all those versions!  Duly noted and appreciated.

Regarding the test backup to NAS: I have a semi-regular OS image backup with the NAS as destination.  Will that do for the test?  I'll go ahead and run that and report later today.

Ran and verified both a Disks and Partitions and a Files and Folders backup to the NAS successfully.

For the next step, I will delete and rebuild my NAS credential, and try to backup the NAS again.

z

Thanks for the update, at least the backups to the NAS worked correctly proving that the credentials to do this are good, so perhaps another area to check are if you have different credentials for the folders used for storing backups to the folders on the NAS that you are trying to backup from?

Same credential for all NAS I/O operations.

Am running a different backup and validation that also goes to the USB external drive, plus a full validation for the NAS backup and will report.  Previous report of "validates OK" for the NAS backup was only a partial validation to see if the program would choke.  Will run a full validation now, just to be sure.

If all this goes without a hiccup, I will delete/rebuild the credential and try again.

In reply to by truwrikodrorow…

Ho hiccups.  Rebuilt credential.  Verified access in Windows Explorer.  Ran newly created NAS backup ("test2"), which failed authentication as all others have done since the beginning of this thread.  Here's the ATI failure message:

Please note that I tried establishing this "test2" task with no credential in place but could not complete the steps.  ATI stalled at selecting source files.  Again, no query or opportunity from ATI to enter authentication settings.  After establishing the credential in Windows, I was able to create the task. Results pasted/posted above.

Maybe I need the CleanupTool after all.  Don't want to reinstall, but that's looking to be the next step.  Am not confident I can do that and not interrupt my backup sets.

Your thoughts?

z

Z, this does seem to be a very strange issue and I personally am running out of ideas as to what next to suggest.

You could open a Support Case with Acronis for this and let them try to investigate this further or as you considered above, perhaps try a clean install.

Another possible option would be if you have another computer which has not ever had either ATIH or used credentials for your NAS that you could test on?  Perhaps use a 30-day trial copy of ATIH for this purpose?  That would prove that the problem is either on your current computer or the NAS depending on the results you see?

Great suggestion, and as it turns out I do have such a machine.  But before I go there...

What's bugging me the most about this is contained in the header of this thread, "Can't Edit Connection Settings".  ATI has never asked for that data.  Is there a way to force ATI2016 to allow editing of the current user ID and pw for the NAS?  Seems to me that earlier versions did have that option, but I can't find it in this almost-current version.  What gives?

As always, thank you and I really appreciate your time and energy, Steve.  You truly are the forum hero.

z

Z, I don't remember seeing any option to allow me to edit my own connection settings in any of the recent versions other than the challenge given when attempting to make an initial connection to a new NAS or other network resource.

See KB 58004: Acronis True Image 2016: Troubleshooting Issues Related to NAS Credentials which is the definitive document on this particular subject.

Bingo!  ISSUE FIXED  thankyouthankyouthankyou

KB 58004 had the fix, and a simple one too.  I deleted the registry key.  Took a couple of tries. I had to remove / recreate the Windows Credential too, AND I had to recreate the ATI task using a different %BACKUP_NAME%, AND select a different destination (folder) on the USB external drive (don't use or rename the old one, delete it and then create a new one), plus a few reboots before all began working again.

The issue with changing names and destinations speaks to me of further info in the Registry that contains login information.  I am curious: Does the CleanupTool wipe all ATI registry entries in addition to its other functions?

z

Z, great to hear that this issue is fixed via KB 58004 guidance - thank you for giving the feedback on this.

The Cleanup Tool should wipe all the ATI registry entries as well as cleaning all files / folders except for those which are deemed to hold your user information that you may wish to retain.  See the sticky topic: [How to] uninstall a previous installation which is based around using the cleanup tool.
