Change Acronis Backup Drive Letter Assignment in Windows 10

Thread needs solution

During upgrade Windows’s took over my I:\ drive for its own internal use.

The external hard disk drive with the Acronis backups is now assigned to drive M:\.

Windows will not let me change drive I to anything else, so how do I get Acronis to repoint from I:\ to M:\ ?

I would change the external drive's letter to one that is way up in the alphabet as to keep that letter and disk remembered in the registry. Do not use X: as that letter is used by WinPE.

If you go to the Acronis dashboard and select the backup on the left side you can then mouse over the "Custom destination" pane and you will see that you can change the destination. Once you do that you can validate the backup.

Personally, at this point, I would start a new backup job because Acronis doesn't behave well after changing a script.

Hello, A Doug Ferris.

I suggest you do this, if you want to preserve your old backups and continue backing up to the same incremental/differential chain (assuming you use incremental/differential backups):

Click on the arrow next to the backup name, then click "Delete". On the dialog window click on "SETTINGS ONLY". After you do that - click on the arrow next to "Add backup", then click "Add existing backup". Select your backup, which is located on the external drive. Then reconfigure the backup. After this you should be able to continue using the backup plan.
