Clone HDD (larger) to SSD (smaller) - using clone disc utility

Thread needs solution

I am using the latest True Image (2016) to clone my OS HDD (1TB) to an SSD (500GB).  The whole HDD is about 250GB.  It allows me to set the source and target accordingly, but the clone will not run.  It simply sits there on the status window showing the progress.  Everything I have read tells me I can go from a larger drive to a smaller one assuming they are basic disks and there is enough space on the final drive.  Based on my results I am thinking this is not the case.  I have tried running on the OS HDD as well as booting to a second system with the source and target drives attached and both do not work!  In the past I have used the 2011 True Image for cloning a disk many times, but the 2011 and 2016 versions do not work with this HDD and SSD combination.  Has anyone seen something simular?

Performing the clone when booted from the TI RecoveryCD is the recommended procedure.

Is your disks GPT or MBR style disks?

GroverH, The source drive is the OS, it is the 1TB HDD, so this is the MBR type.  So, it is partitioned as 350 MB for the system reserved space and the rest is the c:\ drive partition.  Regarding your comment "Performing the clone when booted from the TI RecoveryCD is the recommended procedure", so you mean I should create a separate disc to boot from and then from this RecoveryCD I would select the source (OS - 1TB HDD) and the target (500GB SSD)?

Yes that is correct. Read all of my link to read Acronis recommendation.

I prefer backup and restore which is safer, rather than cloning but to each their own.
