Disk Cloning Physical VMWare Disk to larger disk

Thread needs solution

I want to clone my boot vmware host disk to a larger disk using the disk clone utility. I've selected manual partitioning, but it doesn't let me modify the partition size, and instead is created an unallocated partition equal to the left of gb difference between the two.

Any ideas?

James, welcome to these user forums.

When you say you want to clone your boot vmware host disk - what actual system is involved here?  This sounds like it is a server system that is hosting one or more vmware virtual machines?

How are you attempting to do this clone action?  What filesystem is used on the vmware host disk? What types of partitions are used?

Personally, I am not a great fan of cloning as it has a number of restrictions and is not as flexible (or safe) as using the superior Acronis Backup followed by doing a Restore / Recovery of the backup to the new disk drive.

See topic: [IMPORTANT] CLONING - How NOT to do this!!! - this was written primarily for Windows users, so may not be as relevant to your VMware Host system here.

hi,

in fact, i don't understand your meaning. i am very sorry. but, i have some idea you may need.

if you want to increase a particular partition, you can move unallocated space , resize partition or directly merge partition etc.

if you want to upgrade your old disk with a new larger disk, you can replace the hard drive in two ways.

1. backup your old disk to an external hard drive and restore it to the new one

2. you can directly clone the old disk with the new one.
