Encrypted folder presenting problems

Thread needs solution

I am using TrueImage 2016 to backup a 240GB SSD (system drive) and a 2TB HDD (data & most programs).  I have separate incremental backup schemes for each.

On the data drive (D:) there is a folder named Vera that is encrypted with VeraCrypt and VC has assigned it the drive letter N: when it is mounted.  As the encrypted volume is backed up elsewhere and doesn't need to be included with TrueImage, I entered the exemption N:\Vera\ into the scheme for the C: drive and also the D: drive scheme.

The backup scheme for the SSD should only backup what is on the C: drive, although whenever run I receive an error message which reads as follows:

"The last backup has failed.  Failed to exclusively access backup N:\My backups\My partitions_inc_b2_s2_v1.tib during consolidation.  Make sure the backup file is not opened in other applications."

This is very strange, as N: is an encrypted volume on the D: drive - a different physical drive - and this backup scheme specifies only the SSD physical drive (C:).

Also, the N: drive does not, and never did, contain a folder named My backups

Any assistance will be appreciated.  Thx

Godan2011, welcome to these user forums.

From the description you have given, it doesn't sound like the encrypted drive should be causing the error message you are seeing, but it would be good if you could post the actual log file for the backup task where you are seeing this failed to exclusively access... message.

Download the Log File Viewer app from the link in my signature below to make it easier to find and read the logs.

Is it possible that you had a different drive that used the drive letter N: at some time and was used for backups?

Thank you.

I have copied the log file below.

I may have had a hard drive denoted as N: in the past, but that must have been at least a few years ago, as I have not changed my internal storage drive configuration in at least 2 years.

Sorry, the log file information in your post looks to be a problem with your downloading the Log File Viewer app and nothing to do with the Acronis application issues.  Try saving the attached zip file with the Log File Viewer.

If you have had an external disk drive using drive letter N: in the past then this could still be remembered in the Acronis Database which is used for task history and then be picked up when running tasks now.  This can happen when backup files are deleted manually via Windows Explorer which doesn't allow the Acronis Database information to be updated to reflect changes to files.

Thanks for the extremely fast reply.

Got it this time.  Here is the log file, which includes a notation about the specific error being encountered.

Thank you for the log file information, this looks to confirm that the Acronis Database information is most likely behind these error messages as these are occurring during the automatic cleanup actions after the main task has successfully created the next backup image file.

id=16; message=The specified file path does not exist.;

As can be seen from the messages above, the task name in id=15 is different to the task being performed, so the Database information is corrupted for this to happen.

I would recommend doing the following in order to resolve this issue.

  1. Clone the task settings for your SanDisk SDSSDX240GG25 task - this will create a duplicate task with the name (1) SanDisk SDSSDX240GG25 - do not attempt to run this task at this point.
  2. Remove the original SanDisk SDSSDX240GG25 settings - you do not need to delete the backup files unless you want to make a clean start.  Removing the task settings will also remove information about the task from the Acronis Database files.
  3. Rename the cloned task to remove the (1) prefix and check the settings are correct then select to Backup either now or later.

Steve,

It is good to know that the error is generated after completion of the backup.  I'll try your method of cloning/deleting the task.

FYI, I have previously removed the task and then re-created it, but after the backup is completed, the error was again displayed.  As noted earlier, I have two backups configured, one for only the SSD drive (system and some programs that are slow to load such as Quickbooks) and one for a HDD I used for other programs installs and for data, and both were deleted and then re-created with the error still displayed after running each of the backups.  Interestingly, I have 2 additional HDDs in my machine for backups, and the two ATI backups backup to separate HDDs.

If cloning/deleting doesn't work, perhaps I should try uninstalling and then reinstalling ATI2016.  I generally like to uninstall using IOBit Uninstaller as it also cleans up any leftover keys in the registry.  Before using IOBit Uninstaller, I used a registry cleaner to clean up after uninstalls, the I like the IOBit program because it also allows batch uninstalls.

It would be nice if ATI had config files containing souce, destination, and other task configuration info, which could be viewed and edited, but ATI probably stores that in an internal record somewhere.

I'll get back in a day or two, after I have had time to try your suggestion.

Regards

Phil

Phil, you shouldn't need to uninstall ATIH 2016 and reinstall it for this problem, as you can try a different approach first of cleaning the database.

To do this, you first need to stop / end all  - stop the Services first then end the programs.  You can do this by opening Windows Task Manager (right-click on the task bar) then clicking on Services and opening the Services console (services.msc).  End the programs from within Task Manager.

Next, in Explorer navigate to C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome where you will see the Database folder - either rename this to Database.OLD or delete it.   Note: All your task configuration data is stored in the Scripts folder found here too, so you can back this up if you need to reinstall.

Now, just relaunch ATIH 2016 and it will restart the Services and Programs plus will rebuild the Database as new.  You will lose all the task history for your backups but this will be picked up from the last backup file dates, and when you run the tasks.

Steve - Thanks for the good and very easy to follow info.

FYI, I started out in IT as a database programmer (aka "application developer") in 1987 and now have a home-based business providing IT support (mostly software & network troubleshooting) to residences and small businesses.  As I didn't work on the development of ATI, though, I'm unfamiliar with its configurations and don't really have the time or inclination to do a lot of research into it, so your comments are very helpful.

Thanks again,

Phil

Phil, glad to be able to help and hope this problem is sorted for you.

Your info did a great job of cleaning up the mess.  I just ran the SSD backup with no error message and am running the HDD backup now, although (at just under a TB) it should take a few hours to complete.  One thing I found was that after doing the cleanup, when I ran ATIH it couldn't locate the existing (full) backup and Locate didn't work so I just ran Ignore and a new backup started running.  I then deleted the old full backup .tib file in file explorer and all seems to be well.

It would be nice if Acronis had a section in their user guide or KB for advanced users, containing this info.  Maybe there already is something like this but I haven't come across it.

Regards

Phil

Phil, thanks for the further feedback / update - unfortunately this advanced information isn't documented anywhere that I am aware of, other than in the forum posts where the MVP's have advised other users in similar scenarios.
