Entire PC backup:Not completing :several days

Thread needs solution

Hi All,

I am new here, and probably this question might have already been answered.

If that is the case , there is no need to answer it again, and a link would be helpful as well.

Question:

Product Used: Acronis True Image Cloud 2016

Windows OS : Windows 7 64 bit

Backup type: Full PC

Destination: External drive (Seagate)

------------------------------------

Issue: Backup running from last 4-5 days. The Acronis Console shows:

Backing up... 159.69 GB

4 hours 13 minutes remaining

------------------------------------

Both the amount of data and time keep on changing.

There has not been any complete back up yet, if any , it does not show anything in "Last Backup" Value(Blank)

Any idea , what is happening? I have Shared Point/One Drive mapped under C:, and also Outlook OST/PST under C:. Both email and Onedrive actively being updated.

C: Drive  itself being backed up under this backup policy.

Again,Please, if you think this has already been answered, please give me the link . Would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

I will be closing Outlook and pausing onedrive before I leave for the day. Hopefully, that would work.

Tushar, a couple of suggestions here:

1.  Download a copy of the Log File Viewer app from the forum and use this to check for any messages being written to the logs for your backup task.

2.  Acronis backup uses the Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) to create a snapshot of the data to be backed up, so your Outlook updates or cloud folder changes should not have any impact as the snapshot will be taken at the start of the backup task and further changes will not be included.  For Outlook, many changes are held in memory and would only be included once written out to disk prior to the VSS snapshot being created.

See forum post: Three ways to disable VSS - but please note that this would only apply to the task being restarted, not to the current running task.

It is possible that there may be a VSS issue here that is contributing to the very long backup time - you have only told us how much data is reported as being backed up (Backing up... 159.69 GB) but not how much data comprises your Full PC system (total drive space, total free space, how many drives etc)?

Another possibility is if you have an latent disk problems on the source drive(s), i.e bad sectors being encountered - this is where the log files may help shed some light on why the backup has been running for the last 4-5 days.

Hi Steve,

Does Acronis True Image Cloud 2016 use VSS?

I am looking at below link and it says no for VSS. May be I am reading it wrong. Also, I have looked all over the options but do not see VSS.

Thanks

I have disabled "Volume Shadow Copy"  from services console and started a new backup

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Currently the console says: Backing up..9.92 GB

4 hours 59 minutes remaining.

C Drive is "322 GB full" and 142 GB free.

D drive is 150 GB full

Here are my service logs so far.

Does it look like going in right direction so far?

Are the backups always so slow?

Thanks

Tushar

Currently it is..

34.43 GB

4 hours 10 minutes remaining

It is not saying "calculating time" this time, which I think is a good thing? No update in logs yet. They are the same

Thanks

Tushar

Tushar, ATIH 2016 does use Microsoft VSS so not sure why the KB document you found was saying the opposite.

The log file that you pasted looks normal as far as can be seen - did you find a log for the previous run that had taken over 4 days?  That may have been more interesting - you can attach it either as a zipped file, or just rename the file extension from XML to TXT, which is easier to handle than pasting a very long log into the forum directly.

Was going to start a new post, but this is relavant.

How can Acronis take 1 day and 11 hours to back up 1.25 Tb on a Gigabit network to a NAS drive?  How does the application decide the time required for a backup?

It will depend on your network speed, NAS performance and system performance.  Backing up 1.25Tb across any network is likely to take quite some time.  However, many NAS devices are underpowered in CPU and memory and can suffer from long write sessions and local network performance can be another issue.  If you want to test time comparison, just copy and paste the source to the destination and see how long it takes to copy from Windows to Windows.

For comparison, I backup 70Gb to a local SSD and it takes 7 minutes. That same backup to an SMB share across a gigabit network to a 7200rpm drive attached to my home router via USB 3.0 takes 40 minutes.  Assuming all resources remain steady (on source and destination, and no issues on the network) that would be roughly 15 hours, but is likely to fluctuate with varying calculated times throughout the backup as reources change along the way.  Also, larger files will backup more quickly and smaller files with nested folders will backup up more slowly when it gets to those.

Hi Steve,

The last backup completed successfully on external HDD.(seagate portable)

Now I am facing another issue with cloud backups which are failing.

Can you please advice. Attached the logs for all three cases.

I have attached only service logs, do you need some thing else to help here?

Thanks

Tushar

Tushar, thank you for the log files.

From the failed Seagate log, I see the following messages which confirm that you were having a Microsoft VSS issue:

message=Unable to create volume snapshot;
message=Failed to start creating the volume snapshot.;
message=Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy

The above messages are reported several times before the backup task failed.

From the failed Cloud log, I see the messages shown below:

message=Unsupported file type.;
message=Operation has been aborted.;

You will need to contact Acronis Support about this Cloud issue if it is still failing for you as we cannot help with Cloud issues in the user forums as we have no access to the systems they use.

See KB document: 47145: Acronis Cloud Connection Verification Tool which you can use to check your connection to the Cloud is OK.

And KB document: 4350: Acronis Backup to Cloud Access Ports and Hostnames in case you need to switch to using a different Cloud Access Port.

Hi Steve,

Just chatted with their support. They informed me that Acronis logs are generated on the client end. Waiting for them to send me an email for sending them the logs. They wanted to do a screen share, which is a total wastage of time. Anyhow, I found this article : https://kb.acronis.com/content/58174

Any thoughts?

I will also take look at the tools you provided as soon I get time.

Thanks

Tushar

Hi Tushar, the KB document you found was for the ATI for MAC product so unlikely that is relevant to this issue.

Probably the easiest way to collect all the Acronis logs is to run the Acronis System Report tool which you can find in either the Help option, or via Tools >> More Tools.  If the system report is less than 20MB in size, you can post a copy to the forum, otherwise you can submit it via the Feedback tool and reference any case number that Acronis may have given you, else reference this forum post, or do both.

Hi Steve,

They gave me the same steps as provided by you. Will the following option work?

1. Since I am able to take entire pc back up on seagate portable drive. Can I use "Acronis" source: Files and folder(Seagte TIB successful file)-->Acronis Cloud.

Please let me know if this will work?

2. How do I verify once it completes that the file will be usable? to restore entire pc?

3. How many backups can(cloud backups) can run simulataneously on same Windows 10 machine?

Please advice.

Thanks

Tushar

I also have Win 7, 64-bit and just purchased Acronis True Image 2016.

I tried backing up (with high priority) the full PC; then just one of my two drives; then just my User folder; then finally just some folders.  And each time the backup went into hours with no sign of completing anytime soon.  Granted I was backing up to an external USB drive, but it should have done much better.

Just using Windows copy function copied the 434 Gbytes worth of files very quickly. Unfortunately, the copy program doesn't do incrementals.

Needless to say, I am quite dissatisfied with the results of the Acronis program. I had a program years ago that would backup the entire PC in under 3 hours. I only wish I could remember what it was, because it beats Acronis by miles.

I had high expectations based on reviews.  As it is, I am shelving Acronis and will be looking for something else. Good thing I only paid $30 for it.

Tushar, you would need to modify the default exclusions if you are intending to save an existing .TIB image file to the Acronis Cloud, as these files are normally excluded by default. I am not sure that this work well due to the physical file sizes involved and you would not have the benefit of the normal delta backups for the source data to the Cloud, where only the changed data is uploaded.  Your TIB image file would be unchanged once uploaded.

I would assume that the verification of the TIB upload would be in the process itself as there is no Validation option shown in the ATIH GUI for my Cloud backups.

You would need to download the whole TIB image to a local drive in order to perform the restore of the entire PC.

At present the Cloud storage is set as unlimited but there are indications that Acronis could apply a limit of 15TB per PC as per KB document: 56622: Acronis True Image Cloud: Fair Usage Policy which states:

Acronis reserves the right to set reasonable storage limits in the future (i.e. 15TB / PC or Mac on Unlimited Accounts).

Lon, please see my response in post #2 of this thread - in particular with reference to Microsoft VSS which can be a cause of similar issues with slow backup times.  The Log File Viewer app will also help to show more details of what is happening.

Please note that there is no direct comparision between doing a standard Windows file copy and using Microsoft VSS to create a shadow copy snapshot of system data before compressing this into an archive image file and then transferring that to your external drive.

A more accurate comparison would be the time taken by Windows Backup to make a system image to the same external drive, which would also use Microsoft VSS in the process.

Steve, thank you for responding. However, when I purchase a software program, I expect it to work right out of the box. Win 7 has been around a long time, and Acronis should have had no problems interfacing with it. I have no desire to modify anything to make it work, nor should I have to. It simply is an inferior product, or broken, or both. I have since uninstalled it, purchased another backup program and completed the entire backup of 434 Gbytes to my external USB drive in 4.5 hours. My only regret is wasting $30.

Something occured to me based on past experience in using another disk imaging backup software, Norton Ghost.  Ghost used to hang when there wasn't sufficient disk space to create the image that was going to be backed up.   Could this be the issue with the "calculating" message?

Robert,

I encourage you to start a new thread for this "calculating" topic as it has nothing to do with this thread.  A short answer to your question is yes, along with a good number of other factors.

Lon, if all computer systems were identical / equal, then I would totally agree with your statements.  Unfortunately, that is not the case and something that works on one may not work on another 'supposedly' identical system.

I am glad that you have found a backup solution that works for you and would suggest contacting Acronis directly to see if they would be willing to offer you a refund of your $30, as I am sure it is not in anyone's interest to have customers who are totally dissatisfied with their product.

See document: 18623: How to get Technical Support: Tips, Tricks and Useful Information - alternatively, send a PM (private message) to Gaidar, General Manager Acronis True Image and engage his help in seeking a refund.

Thanks Steve. I am still working on a way to store my acronis backups to cloud. Will post a response to it once I try something out

Would you be able to help here?

 1) What happens to my backups if I do not renew my subscription, does Acronis deny me access to them?

I have encrypted then with a passcode or encryption key. What if I do not renew my subscription, next year or anytime in future? Will I still be able to use them indefinitely, whether on cloud in Acronis infrastructure or on my hard disk ?  Should I also keep a copy on my external drive always to be on the safe side?  If so, should I do it with or without Acronis software?(as long they do not try to govern whether I can access local backups or not because I have not renewed my subscription? I have seagate software which I would chose to in that case, or basic windows backup solution.

if above is true,are you aware of the online documentation which says so for acronis, or if it is part of the legal agreement, which I believe no one ever reads.

2) Are the backups taken for all user directories or only from where it is run? I have two different users on my Macbook Air. I want to backup them both. What should I do?

3) what is ATIH and ATIC? I read it many times.

4) How do I modify the default settings(exclusions) from windows 10 (Acronis True Image Cloud)? Is it the options tab(Disk Backup options?)

I thought to ask this from you instead of contacting Acronis support. I find your answers much more easy to understand and also you respond to in short period of time. From my converstion with Acronis support, I do not feel they have more knowledge than you, and also I have to wait for a week to get a response from them.

Thanks

Tushar

56514: Acronis True Image 2016 Editions and Licensing

After your Acronis True Image Cloud subscription expires, all product functionality will be blocked until further subscription renewal, however, the backed up data is still accessible:

  • For 5 days after subscription expires you can continue making backups to cloud storage.
  • During 30 days after subscription expires you can restore data from Cloud Storage. Thirty days after subscription expiration the data in cloud storage is destroyed.
  • Local backups remain available for restore.

`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
FAQ on main product page
8. Question: What is the license policy for Acronis True Image?
Response: Acronis True Image has two editions:
Acronis True Image Cloud is a subscription-based product. When your subscription expires, you have 30 days to recover your data from the Acronis Cloud. You can also recover your data from local backups without time limits. To continue using Acronis True Image Cloud, you need to renew your subscription.
• Acronis True Image 2016 is a product that is based on a perpetual license. The product doesn’t contain Acronis Cloud functionality, including online backup, data synchronization, data archiving, online dashboard, file sharing, or mobile device backup.
2) Are the backups taken for all user directories or only from where it is run? I have two different users on my Macbook Air. I want to backup them both. What should I do?
Depends on what you select to backup.  You can choose the entire disk, or just certain directories.  If you select the entire disk, it will get all data on the disk at that point in time so that a restore mage to the same system will lbe bootable.
3) Lastly, what is ATIH and ATIC? I read it many times.
ATIH - Acronis True Image Home (stand-a-lone / perpetual license version with no cloud backup access and minor version upgades only.  Technical support is limited to 30 days except for recovery issues, licensing issues or account issues which are always covered.)
ATIC - Acronis True Image Cloud (subscription version of the product with Cloud backup access and annual maintenance for major version upgrades and annual support)
Different features.  If you don't need/want cloud backups then ATIH is great, but only has the 30 day support.  If you need/want cloud storage, ATIC is the way to go and you get unlimited support while you have an active subscription.
The downside to ATIC is that is you don't renew your subsription, you need to copy your data back before 30 days or it's gone.  You also can't make new backups with the application if there is no support.  In that regards, ATIH is nice because it works forever.
