Error continues when trying to Clone system drive

Thread needs solution

Hi... i bought Acronis TI 2016 as i saw it worked with Windows 10 and i knew Acronis was heavily recommended by a PC shop i use..
I used to be on Windows 7 Ultimate, and upgraded to Windows 10 Pro..

I bought a 1TB SATA drive to clone my original IDE 320gb drive to, as the IDE is running out of space and i wanted the main windows system on a bigger drive anyway..
I have other HDD drives in the PC.. 2x500gb Sata drives and the new 1TB Sata i just got..
I opened up the Acronis software and had the 1TB drive in a USB docking station.. but after seeing the Acronis tutorial video i moved the drive to inside the tower and connected it directly to the system mainboard with the other drives.. i used the 'Automatic' option and proceeded to restart the system.. on restarting i continually got the message below..

"One or more of your removable disks may not have started at the moment. Click "Yes" to wait for full startup of the devices (recommended). Click "No" to ignore unitialized devices and continue..." [the third option is to cancel the clone]

Clicking "Yes" or "No" allows me to make the backup possible..

System log attached... Hope somebody can help..

Many Thanks

Tim,

Please note I am not using Win 10 or ATI2016.  I am fairly experienced with PCs, earlier Windows versions, and Acronis products other than 2016.

I believe you have a hardware conflict issue.  It could be a situation where the only way to accomplish the clone is with the 1TB drive in a USB docking station.  ATI2016 and previous versions will support this.  Acronis does not recommend this because the HDD will not boot as a USB.  My guess is that Arconis received a lot of complaints from users about cloned drives not booting (still connected through USB). This is a windows/PC limitation and not an Acronis problem.

Here's how I would proceed.

Remove new 1TB HDD from your system.  Boot should then be back to normal with no error messages.

With your system up and running, you should activate Acronis Startup Recovery Manager, if you haven't done so already.  Page 124 of the user manual.

With Acronis Startup Recovery Manager operational, reboot.  In the boot sequence, you will see a screen that says "Press F11 for Acronis Startup Recovery Manager"...

Press F11.  A limited version of ATI2016 should run, with no error messages.  If you get any error messages, copy them down and start another thread with those error messages.

Assuming there are no error messages, shut down the computer, and attach the 1TB drive using USB.  Boot normally to Windows 10.  Call up Windows Explorer and verify that Windows can see your 1TB HDD.  It should have assigned a drive letter to it.

If Windows does not see the drive, then you will need to format the drive using the Windows procedure or you could "Add new drive" using ATI 2016.

If windows does see the drive, then reboot and hit F11 when the F11 screen comes up. Once ATI2016 comes up, you should navigate to the tools page and perform the clone operation.  Starts on page 106 of the user manual.

Once the clone completes, remove the old boot drive and install the new boot drive.

In the next boot sequence, you will need to point the BIOS to the new 1TB drive.

I hope this all works out for you!

Please let us know.

i have done as you advised... F11 option now comes up after the boot menu listings etc...
i can go into the acronis software and hit the clone option, but the hard drive list doesnt have my system drive listed, all that is there are my 2x500GB drives and the 1TB drive in the usb docking station... so i cant select the source drive??

Puzzled now..

A classic 2 steps forward 1 step back.

Probable cause for not seeing the boot disk is the Linux Kernel (which loads when F11 is pressed) does not have IDE drivers.

So, there is a way forward if you can free up 320GB of space on one of the 500GB drives.

So, let me know if you can free up the space.  There options either way.

FtrPilot

one of the 500gb drives is just an empty spare anyway.. so yes.. the space is there..

OK....

I am struggling a bit here, because I use ATI2014 and I am referring to the ATI2016 user manual to make sure I don't steer you wrong.

With ATI2016 running under Windows (Don't hit F11).  Do a disk mode backup of your boot disk. I believe you would select Disk Level Backup.  I am hoping there is an option for disk mode or partition mode.  If there is an option for disk mode, use disk mode.

You can create an empty folder on the 500GB drive to send the backup to.

Once you have created the disk mode backup, you will then do a Restore of that backup to the 1TB drive, still connected to USB.  You should be able to accomplish the restore running ATI2016 under Windows.  If ATI2016, running under windows, fails to do the restore (generates error message(s)), then try running the restore after hitting F11.

After the restore is complete, remove the old boot drive and install the new boot drive.

In the next boot sequence, you will need to point the BIOS to the new 1TB drive.

Let me know if you experience any problems.

Hope this works.

I'll be checking back periodically to see how you are doing.

Thanks for the continued advice.. much appreciated.. i decided last night to treat myself to this software... and typical that it doesnt all go smoothly.. Boxing day isnt always a busy one for me though, so i thought i would see whats going on with this by posting here.. i have started the backup of the main C Drive to the 500GB drive.. its a spare drive i had anyway, so it can always be formatted again if need be...

Would it not be better to do the backup straight to the USB 1TB though?

The backup only creates a large .tib file.  The magic happens in the restore.  The restore of a "disk mode" backup should create a boot disk.

Im lost now... i did a backup to the spare 500GB Drive.. im now putting that backup onto the 1TB drive in the USB Docking station.. but thats wrong isnt it??  got a feeling somethings not right... i can get lost easily in this application...

You should do a "Restore" from the backup.tib file that's on the 500gb drive to the 1TB drive that's connected thru USB.

I just re-read your previous post...don't copy the backup to the 1TB drive.  You have to do a "Restore" to the 1TB drive.

After the "Restore" you will then swap the old for the new.

FtrPilot

i have done the restore as you said...did a boot disk. although i was worried about not knowing what drivers to add on it, none did go on the disc... but at this time the 1TB drive has been successfully written to from the 'recover files' option/tool...

what next ?

ok.... All folders on the old C Drive are on the new 1TB drive... when booting up in the recovery disk i dont get any operating systems showing up on the dropdown options... it has the options to add file locations for the other two main tasks but the dropdown option for an OS is blanked out..

so close..

Have you removed the old IDE drive and installed the new 1tb drive?

at this time the old IDE is in use so i can post on here.. but last night i completely removed it and set the boot settings to first device of the dvd drive and then bumped the 1TB drive up the list in bios.. i got the same result though.. Recovery window application has no OS listed..
The 1TB drive has all the same folders as the normal C Drive, but doesnt have a TIB file.. thats on the spare 500gb drive..

The new 1TB drive should contain everything that your old IDE drive contained. The 1TB drive should function as a boot drive.  The TIB file is a backup file used only by ATI2016. It does not go onto the 1TB drive.  Do not copy it onto the 1TB drive.

You should be able to set the BIOS boot settings to the 1TB drive, and it should boot. You should not have to boot via a DVD.

One more question...when you did the backup did you use "disk mode" and not "partition mode"?

it was selected as 'disks'

Image i have used here is just an illustration so you can see what i did..

At the time it was from the spare 500gb drive to the J drive which is the 1TB HDD

OK, I believe you performed the backup and restore correctly.

So, from here it will take more time if things don't work and you  have to reload the IDE drive.  I am going to take 5 or 10 minutes to write up some options for your to try.

If your computer does not recognize the 1tb drive as a boot drive, then the Master Boot Record (MBR) is most likely not formatted correctly.

Also, while I am composing your "things to try", can you tell me about your Recovery Window Application?  How is it called up?  Does it have any options regarding MBR?

Download the ATI2016 User Manual (if you haven't done so already)

Things to try:

Remove IDE install 1TB. Put 1TB at top of boot list. Try a boot with no DVD installed. I'm hoping this works.

If not successful, then the most probable cause is the MBR is not formatted properly.
So, with 1TB at the top of the list, insert the window recovery dvd and boot again.  I'm hoping that the recovery dvd has an option for "repair MBR" or "repair boot." Or "repair OS."

If the dvd has one of those options, give it a try, then try another reboot.

If the recovery dvd does not work, then install the IDE and describe what occurred.

Something else you may want to try is remove all drives and install the IDE and the 1TB only and see if that eliminates the original problem that I thought was a hardware conflict.  Then, if possible, connect the 500gb drive that contains the TIB file using USB.

ok... update... i have just removed the original 320GB drive and altered the boot and made the 1TB the main drive.. and for some strange reason it worked!  im now posting on here using the PC with the new drive in use.. Im going through checking files to see if pictures and music are all good, and its ok so far.. got to check some applications to make sure they work, but all good so far..

Although i just for a windows pop up saying Acronis TI has failed! Weird...

EDIT: The 'Failed' message is explained.. think a backup started and i didnt realise it earlier..

I knew it would work...You did everything correctly!

Congratulations!

You can disregard my other recommendations.  ;)

Thanks VERY much for your time over these last couple of days... much appreciated..
Got there in the end.. just got to purchase a couple more SATA cables now for my spare drives..
Its good to see applications fully working without having to reinstall each one and get the product key sorted every time..

Have a good New Year!

You are very welcome...I'm glad I could help.
