Failed to open Backup

Thread needs solution

Hello Im running Windows 10 True Image 2016 I have two small SSDs (MBR - one for windows and one spare) one large HDD (GPT at 2 TB) All drives are internal drives - Sata. Creating an Image of my system to my spare SSD or HDD poses no problem. All backups can be validated no problem also. Recovering from my SSD works great. Recovering from my HDD does not work. True Image always reports „failed to open backup...“ Thing is... images are not corrupt. When I move the image from HDD to SSD I can recover it. Whats wrong? Why wont true image recover from my HDD? I thougt GPT was supported. Please give me a hand. Thanks

BoBo Ge, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but more information is needed to try to understand why you have a problem trying to do a recovery from your HDD?

Please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (link in my signature below) and use this to review the log file for your backup operation. This should provide more information on why you are seeing any error messages?

Took me a while...

ATI did work for a couple of days after I created this thread. I could not just create and validate backups - I could also recover from them. Just today I started to experience problems again. Meaning - I can still create and validate… I just cannot recover.

Whenever I pick recover the Computer would reboot and start ATI. It would then load the backup just to tell me that backup cannot be accessed

I only create one file backups (not incremental - there is no part two). Backup files have been revalidated under Windows. Backup is not corrupted. Heres the log:

I really dont know whats wrong. My PC is only three weeks old. Prime tested. Memtest conducted (3 times). No faults. All stable. Please help

The log messages show that ATI needs to restart your computer in order to perform the recovery operation, which when this type of operation is started from the Windows application does two things:

  1. It modifies the Windows boot configuration data to point to a temporary boot environment used for the operation.
  2. It boots into a small Linux kernel OS from which to launch ATI

The issues about the above are that any failure can leave the system unable to boot because the Windows boot configuration may not be put back to how it needs to be, and the Linux kernel OS may not have support for your hardware devices.

It is recommended that any disk recovery should be performed using the Acronis Rescue Media to avoid those issues & risks.  For computers with newer hardware components, it is further recommended to create the Windows PE version of the Acronis Rescue media (for better compatibility with the devices found).

See KB 56610: Acronis True Image 2016: Creating Bootable Media - for details of the options for creating WinPE media.

See also the link in my signature for the MVP Custom PE Builder tool which you can use to create WinPE media and do this using the PE files from your Windows Recovery Environment, including device drivers.

I will try with PE later. However - we have still not figured how I could perform dozens of recovery operations Prior to this Problem reocurring. Is it Software issue? Hardware issue? Bios Setting?

Ive have created a PE Rescue Stick and I tried to recover my backups with it. It did not work. No matter which backup file I choose - I get this message:

Mind you - all backup files are single file backups. They are not incremental and I have used them for recovery dozens of times. It used to work. It no longer does. At this Point my backup files are useless to me. Please help.

Are you able to Validate these backup files or do you also get errors when trying this?

Hi - I have validated all my backup files under Windows - prior to and after the above mentioned recovery failure.

I have installed and tried out the newest Version of ATI - same thing.

I have had luck recovering my HDD one time this morning.
I have tried it again just now - failure.

How is it that ATI sometimes can access my backup drive - sometimes not?
When recovery process starts it either Shows the path to my backup file (at which Point I can tell recovery will work)

or it doesnt Show a path to my backup file (at which Point I can tell it wont work).

If you can demonstrate this issue when using ATI 2020, then please open a Support Case direct with Acronis to allow them to investigate this in greater detail with you.
