Failed to read data from the disk. ERROR

Thread needs solution

I keep getting the error "Failed to read from sector 'xxx, xxx, xxx' of hard disk '4'. Try to repeat the operation. If the error persists, check the disk using Check Disk Utility and create a backup of the disk. Failed to read the snapshot. (0x10C45A) CRC error. (0x100155)"

Then it takes all my external drives off-line so only C: is left. It can't read because the drives no longer exists. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooted and everything else I can think of.

I have three other drives, two of which are 1 TB and the other is an SD card. One of my drives is the backup drive itself. If I use Acronis and backup to drive C: it works, but if I use the external backup drive, that's when all the errors happen.

Does anyone know of any problems or have heard of this issue?

Robert, welcome to these user forums.

Any "Failed to read from sector 'xxx, xxx, xxx' of hard disk 'x'. " errors do normally tell the truth that there is a problem with a bad sector on the drive being indicated.  Note though that Acronis counts drives from 1 up, whereas Windows Disk Management shows them counting from 0.

The further "Failed to read the snapshot. (0x10C45A) CRC error. " message indicates that the bad sector may have been encountered in space being used by the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) service that is used under the covers by Acronis to capture a snapshot of data that would not be able to be backed up otherwsie, i.e. System programs and files from the OS.

Please first identify exactly which drive the bad sector is being found on.  What is 'x' then check this in Windows Disk Management (and subtract 1 from the drive number).

Next, run CHKDSK /F /R against that identified drive ,i.e. CHKDSK C: /F /R
