Files & Folders Backup

Thread needs solution

I am failing to create file & folders backup. The latest version/build of TrueImage 2016 is installed.

I have two drives: (1) C drive – contains operating system and programs. Backups work correctly (2) D drive - data drive and all of my documents are in folders on this drive. Files & Folders backups fail.

If I manually select some of the files & folders on D Drive the backup works.

If I manually select all of them, backup fails.

I have uninstalled TrueImage, removed all traces & reinstalled but still fails. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

David,

The backup on D may be failing because of locked files that VSS can't get access to.  Or, it may be that certain sectors/blocks on the drive are bad and it's choking on those when it gets to them, whereas the individual files you're backing up successfully are not in that particular part of the drive.

1) I'd check your Windows System logs to see if there are any standout warning or errors of disk issues.

2) I'd use FTRPilot's Acronis logviewer app to see if there are any stand-out errors there either

3) I'd run "chkdsk /f /r" on the D: drive and see if it detects, marks and/or repairs bad sectors on the drive

4) I'd get a second disk opinion using the free version of hard disk sentinel as well and possibly the free version of WD data lifeguard too

5) In you backup task, under advanced options, there is a section "error handling" that allows you to "ignore bad sectors".  Try turning it on and running the task again.  If successful though, it may mean that bad/corrupted data was backed up or ignored though so using that to restore may bring back bad/corrupted data or it may not be there if skipped.  I've never had a bad recovery when doing this, but the chances are greater if there is corruption on the source disk that's causing this issue.

6) If none of the above have found a solution, you can try setting the backup to not run with  VSS and instead run with the Acronis proprietary Snapapi backup method which was the default method in 2014 and earlier.

7) If all else fails, try to run a full disk backup with the offline recovery media (outside of Windows) and see if it fairs any better.  If not, chances are something is corrupt on the disk.
