Flash drive v other USB drive

Thread needs solution

Hi - newbie question here.

I want to create a bootable USB clone of my hard drive, but am having difficulty finding a flash drive that is big enough to contain it.  I found a 128Gb Fat32 flash drive, but it is about 22Gb too small.

I have no problems finding external hard drives that are big enough.  Sky is the limit there.  But some months ago I had problems because it was not a Flash drive.  Sadly I cannot remember why it was a problem, but I think it was something Acronis-related.

Not much help for you guys, but perhaps someone can confirm

1) that the clone feature to create a bootable backup can work with a general external USB drive, and

2) Are there any features in Acronis that require that you use a flash drive?

thanks

Hello Jack,

Thank you for your posting! I've found the following information:

Acronis True Image 2016 supports the following target locations for creating a bootable media:

  • CD
  • DVD
  • USB flash drive

If you want to create a backup to the removable media and make it bootable, please be aware that Acronis True Image 2016 does not support creating bootable media if a flash drive is formatted in NTFS or exFAT. The drive must have a FAT16 or FAT32 file system. Here you will find the step-by-step screenshots (the process is the same for the current build): https://kb.acronis.com/content/48350

Thank you,

Hello Jack,

Please also see the following comment on how to workaround the limitation with removable hard drives, it could be helpful in your case:  http://forum.acronis.com/forum/110893#comment-324049

Thank you,

Thank you.  Noted for future reference.  For now I have somehow managed to lose another 22 GB so it is down to the right size for the flash drive
