Help! with Settings Please - My First Backup - 210 gb file size for a drive that only contains 50 gb of data

Thread needs solution

My very first backup using Acronis TrueImage 2016.  I think my settings are not quite correct.  My backup is way too large.  I know the first one will be bigger but my C:\ drive (where my OS is) is only 53 gb big, yet my initial backup size is 210 gb.  Can someone please guide me on decent backup schemes and advanced settings.

Thanks.

Scott, if you have downloaded the MVP Log Viewer then the log file for your backup task execution should provide some answers as to why you are seeing a backup of 210GB for your C: drive of 53GB.

Next, check what you have as your Source for the backup task.  If you have selected 'Entire PC' then this can include any other disk drives that are connected to your computer at that time.  You would be advised to use Disks & Partitions for your Source selection then selecting only the one disk & its partitions which avoids any complications.

A further suggestion is to run CHKDSK /R for your Source drive to ensure that you have no bad sectors which could cause ATIH to switch to sector by sector mode which will result in a backup of similar size to your disk drive rather than just the used space.

Ok, now I feel a little silly, I do have the two options checked "Backup sector-by-sector" and "Backup unallocated space", probably safe to assume that is the culprit?

Turn off both options and you backup size will be closer to what you expect.
