How to add Acronis 2016 to other winpe's boot.wim

Thread needs solution

In the past , Acronis 2014 had a tool to add Acronis 2014 to other winpe's boot.wim. But now Acronis 2016 don't have this tool.

I have my own winpe.iso , that with many tools and explorer in it. So I want to add Acronis 2016 in it. Instread of using Acronis 2016 winpe alone.

Is there a way to do this ? Thanks in advance.

Easiest method I've found is to take the boot.wim file fro myour existing WinPE and copy it to the ADK folder...

c:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\amd64    (64-bit)

or

c:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86    (32-bit)

Rename the original winpe.wim in the corresponding folder to winpe.wim.original.bak or whatever you like - just use somethign to identify it so you know which one is the original file.

Then, paste your existing boot.wim file there and rename it to winpe.wim. Acronis will now use your supplied "winpe.wim" as the base for the build :)

When you're done, just remove your version of winpe.wim and rename the original back to winpe.wim to put it back to normaly.  Only caveat is that when you copy your boot.wim file, hopefully it is a 64-bit one already since Acronis 2016/2017 only build 64-bit WinPE by default.

HOWEVER... :) ... we've created a custom media builder that can build 32-winpe as well.  Do the same as above, but instead of running the Acronis rescue media builder, use our tool instead and it will do the rest with your winpe.wim file that's already in place as well.

and with the new goodies (browser, file explorer) we've put a new update on Google Drive to get around the size restrictions of the forum, but I haven't updated the sticky with the new version yet.

Thanks for you tutor and instruction.

I made my win8pe.iso and extract the sources\boot.wim to :

C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\en-us\winpe.wim

You give me the download link to download the 32bit PEBuilder, so I run :

MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v57\MVP_ATIPEBuilder.bat

when run, an error message come out :

KitsRoot not found, can't set common path for Deployment Tools
Press any key to continue . . .

Please help. Thanks

I will tell you how to fix this error if you can give me some information. Please run regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Kits\Installed Roots

Look in the right pane and tell me exactly what you see for the name KitsRoot. It should look something like KitsRoot, KitsRoot8, KitsRoot80 or KitsRoot8.0. Then tell me the exact path that is shown in the data field. It should match the beginning of the path where you saved the boot.wim file. It should be something like C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8\ or C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\80\ or C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.0\.

The problem is Microsoft keeps changing the way they set the folder name between different versions of the ADK.

In the right panel it is :

(Default)       REG_SZ     (value not set)

KitsRoot        REG_SZ     C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.0\

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Windows is Windows 8.0 English version 32bit

Thanks for your help

I've posted the updated version 6.8 of the Mvp pe builder to Google drive. I'm on a phone so don't have the link, but it's in the sticky on the main forum page.

I've downloaded MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v68

When I run MVP_ATIPEBuilder.bat , error message in the command prompt box :

KitsRoot not found, can't set common path for Deployment Tools

Press any key to continue . . .

Please help

I think there is something wrong with your ADK installation. You should uninstall it and delete the folder at C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.0. Then delete the registry key at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Kits\Installed Roots. Then download and install the ADK again. When you install, make sure you install both the Deployment Tools and Windows Preinstallation Environment options.

Thanks for the answer. To make a clean work , I'll format my C: and reinstall Win8.0 , then setup ASK installation to try

Thanks

Sir, I've installed WAIK for Win8.0 with :

Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT)

Deployment Tools

Windows Preinstallation Enviroment (Windows PE)

I downloaded MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v57 in Drive D:\MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v57

I run :

D:\MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v57\MVP_ATIPEBuilder.bat

I still come out with error :

KitsRoot not found, can't set common path for Deployment Tools

Press any key to continue . . .

Peter, I think the issue here is that you are installing the WAIK and not the ADK.

See webpage: Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Downloads which has links for the Windows 8.1 ADK - you could also install the Windows 10 ADK which would give you the latest integrated device driver support.

I installed the Windows 8.0 ADK exactly as you did. I've been able to duplicate your error. We have a problem with the Windows 8.0 ADK. I'll work on this later today and post back when I've found the solution.

In the meantime you can do as Steve suggested. The MVP Tool has been tested with the Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 ADKs.

I've sent you PM with a revised script to test with the Windows 8.0 ADK. Please let us know if it works.

Sir, firstly I can't see any PM with a revised script download link in my gmail account. Would you mind sent it again singlely. Thanks a lot.

This time I've download exactly Windows 8.0 ADK according the link you supply. Then uninstalled the old ADK and reinstall the new ADK. In registry , the corresponding right panel is that :

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Kits\Installed Roots

(Default)         REG_SZ        (value not set)

KitsRoot          REG_SZ        C:|Program Files\Windows Kits\8.0\

I run :

D:\MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v57\MVP_ATIPEBuilder.bat

I still come out with error :

KitsRoot not found, can't set common path for Deployment Tools

Press any key to continue . . .

I'm wondering you always mention about Win8.1 and Win10 ADK. Do you mean I can install Win10 ADK to my Win8.0 OS ?

Thanks for you help

Peter, PM = Private Message which is a function of the Forum which you access by clicking on the Messages option at the top left of the webpage - see screen shot below.

You can install either the Win 8.1 or Win 10 ADK on your Windows 8.0 OS - both should install & work fine.

To see the Private Message go to your Acronis account and look at the left side. You will see messages. It will show (1 new). Click on it to get to the message. I can't attach a file to a PM. Follow my instructions and copy and paste the text I provided to upgrade the script.

You can just wait a few days until a new version of MVP_ATIPRBuilder is released. It will have the problem fixed.

The Windows ADKs are backwards compatible. That means the Windows 10 ADK can be used on a Windows 8.0 system. However, if you uninstall the 8.0 ADK and install the 10.0 ADK, you will still have a problem. Microsoft is very lazy with the uninstall. They leave the Installed Root registry keys behind. You will see two values for Installed Roots. One will be KitsRoot and the other will be KitsRoot10. The existing script will have a problem with this. You will need to delete the KitsRoot value to make the existing script work. The new modified script in my PM will handle it properly without deleting the KitsRoot value.

version 7.0 will be released shortly with the updated script and some additional enchancements to the WinPE environment and tools.  Give it about 30-45 minutes.

Sir , I've downloaded the Private Message new "MVP_ATIPEBuilder.bat" and tried it. It runs with different message this time in command prompt , It shows the creator and the last message is :

Adminative previlege confirmed

Then the command prompt closed. So I don't know what to do next ?

Thanks

Next you should download the Basic version 5.9. It has the revised code. You should also copy the MVP_ATIPEBuilder folder to C drive root and run it from there.

If that doesn't work, it may be because you are trying to use the Win8PESE boot.wim file. Are you sure you placed it in C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Tools\Windows Preinstallation Kit\amd64\en-us and renamed it winpe.wim.

This just may not work this way. In that case, you should visit theoven.org and get the Acronis script they supply to add TI 2017 to the build.

Hello Sir,

I've downloaded the Basic version 5.9

I made my Win8PE.iso and place it's boot.wim in :

C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\8.0\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\en-us

as winpe.wim , of course the original wimpe.wim I named it as winpe.wim.old

I run C:\MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v59\MVP_ATIPEBuilder.bat

It has the same result like before , in the command prompt the last message is "Adminative previlege confirmed" and then the command prompt windows closed, with no further action.

Thanks

I had this happen once during beta testing of one of the early builds. If I recall correctly either rerunning the *.bat file or reinstallation fixed the issue - I suspect user error was the problem.

I have nit checked out the current build, but in earlier builds there were tw *.bat file, one of which is for use as a desktop shotcut to the other. Running that one will produce the result you are reporting. Hope that is the explanation of what you are seeing.

Ian

Allgames71peter, I think you have a bad or old install of Windows ADK (AIK).  If you are running Windows 8, you can safely download and use the latest Windows 10 ADK instead.  If, for some reason, you don't want to go to Windows 10 ADK, at least grab the Windows 8.1 ADK which is also designed to run on Windows 8 and Windows 7 as well.

main ADK page:  https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/windows-assessme…

Windows 10 ADK 1511:  https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=823089

Windows 8.1 latest ADK:  https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=393005

Whatever one you get, remove the 8.0 first from control panel.  Run the new installer and select the top 3 items only (roughly 3.4Gb to install).  After installing, reboot for good measure.  Try running WinPE builder after that.

The reason the script is failing is it is unable to detect the Windows ADK install on your machine. It is looking for specificif registry keys for vesion 8, 8.1, and 10 ADK, but for some reason, is not finding it on your system.  Once you have a newer ADK, I'm confident it will work for you as well.

The fact that the script got to Administrative Priveleges Confirmed means it found the ADK. It is more likely it didn't find the Acronis WinPE.zip file. The script was written to work with TI 2017. As far as I know, it hasn't been tested with TI 2016. On a 32 bit system the script looks in the registry at key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Settings for the value WinPEPath. The data value at that location show the path to the WinPE.zip file. If TI 2016 specifies the WinPE path differently, the script will exit. Can you tell us what exactly is shown in your registry for the WinPEPath? We may be able to modify the script to work for you.

EDIT:

Another thing to mention is that you need the Media add-on for TI 2016 installed to allow you to build WinPE media. You will find the Media add-on in your Acronis account under the TI 2016 product Free Plugin tab.

EDIT 2:

I tested with TI 2016 build 6581. The Media add-on does not need to be installed. Later builds of TI 2016 included the WinPE component in the main installation file. The WinPE path was specified in the registry at the same location as TI 2017. Version 5.9 of the script worked perfectly.

Please confirm you have WinPE.zip at C:\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\WinPE. Also confirm you see WinPEPath at the registry location specified above.

Sir :

I've tried to uninstall WADK 8.0 and install Win10 ADK

I place my win8pe's boot.wim to :

C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\en-us

as winpe.wim , of course the original winpe.wim as winpe.wim.old

I place the "MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v59" to C:\ , then run

"C:\MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v59\MVP_ATIPEBuilder.bat"   and   "C:\MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v59\RUN_MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v59.bat"

They have the same result like before , in the command prompt the last message is "Adminative previlege confirmed" and then the command prompt windows closed, with no further action.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the registry HKLM\SOFTWARE\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Settings :

AutopartExePath      REG_SZ      c:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Acronis\\TrueImageHome\\AutoPartNt.exe

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Acronis2016 WinPE.zip path is :

C:\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\BartPE\WinPE.zip

It seems different yours :

C:\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\WinPE.zip

Thanks

I see the problem. You are using an old build of TI 2016. The MVP Tool was not written to support the old builds of TI 2016. You will need to uninstall the Acronis Media add-on and unistall TI 2016. Then download and install TI 2016 build 6581. If you try to install the new build over the existing build without ininstalling the existing build first, you will have problems.

Sir Mustang, yes you really see the problem, that's where my problem is. And now my problem is solved. Before my Acronis is :

Acronis True Image 2016 Build 5634

Now I've downloaded Acronis True Image 2016 Build 6581, everything is perfect without any error or problem.

I really appreciate all of you Sir , Mustang , Bobbo_3C90X1 , IanL-S and Steve Smith. You all give me a fast response and great help along. You all dedicate to my problem and try to help and solve it. Hope you all can also help the others.

Thanks again to all of you and I've to close this topic.

Peter, thanks for the feedback and words of appreciation - we appreciate your patience too with these dialogues when they get to be lengthy.  Well spotted by Paul (aka Mustang) about the older version of the product.  Both Paul & Rob have put many hours of work into perfecting the MVP PE Builder tool which is a great asset for the users.

Glad to hear it worked for you.

Thank you for staying with me to the end. It was because of you we were able to fix the problem with the Windows 8 ADK. This will help others. It also showed us that the older builds of TI 2016 are not supported. I took a closer look at build 5634 and have found there are no 32 bit WinPE files in that build. Therefore, the older builds of TI 2016 can't be used to build 32 bit media with the current MVP tool. I really appreciate your patience.

I will update the MVP WinPE stickies to relay this information later this week as well!  Good catch Mustang and many thanks for your assistance and Peter's willingness to stick with it and get things sorted out.
