How to clone a non-removable laptop SSD to a bootable HDD

I have a Dell laptop with a 128gb  'non-removable' SSD that I want to clone for a bootable backup.  When I boot to Acronis 2016, do the clone, the disk is not bootable if restored back to the original 'non-removable' SSD.  Where am I going wrong.

John, welcome to these User Forums.

Just to clarify a point here:  Microsoft impose restrictions on booting any external HDD to the Windows OS when connecting via a removable method such as USB.

With regards to cloning your 128GB internal 'non-removable' SSD drive to an external drive, I would recommend not trying to do this as a clone, but rather to do a full disk backup of the SSD to the external drive instead.

Please see forum topic: [IMPORTANT] CLONING - How NOT to do this which will give you more information on this topic area, including some video tutorials in the linked documents.

When doing any disk restore, then this should always be done using the Acronis bootable Rescue Media, and that media in turn should be booted in the same mode as used by your Windows OS (so both as Legacy, or both as UEFI).
See webpage: Check if your PC uses UEFI or BIOS for help in checking this point.
