How to recover from NAS

Thread needs solution

I am having trouble recovering from a NAS backup using True Image 2016.

I am using True Image 2016 to back up three devices:

  1. A Dell all-in-one desktop system.  This is being backed up to Acronis Cloud.
  2. A Lenovo T450 laptop.  This is being backed up to Acronis Cloud.
  3. A Lenovo Yoga laptop.  This is being backed up to a Synology NAS on my local network.

The third device (the Lenovo Yoga laptop) needs to be recovered.  Its system drive (C:) is failing.  The system does boot up, but is painfully slow and unreliable.  I can't use this laptop to perform the recovery.

I have purchased a replacement drive for the Yoga laptop, and I would like to recover the system disk onto this drive and then install it in the laptop.  Here is how I plan to go about it:

  1. Install the replacement drive in an enclosure
  2. Attach it as an external drive to my Lenovo T450
  3. Run True Image 2016 on the T450
  4. Recover the Yoga's system drive from the backup on the Synology NAS to the external drive attached to the T450
  5. Remove the replacement drive from the enclosure and install it in the Lenovo Yoga

I have attempted this a couple of times and not been able to complete it.  Problems:

  • The True Image 2016 application, when running on the Lenovo T450, only lists the cloud-based backups of the Dell desktop system and the T450.  The NAS-based backup of the Lenovo Yoga is not listed.
  • I cannot manually browse to the NAS and point True Image to the backup on the NAS.  Or, if there is a way to do that, I cannot find it.
  • I've created a bootable image on a USB thumb drive and booted up True Image.  I have tried to browse to the NAS-based backup, but the system completely hangs before I can get to the backup.

If anyone can advise me on whether I am approaching this in the right way, or provide any guidance in getting this done, I should be very grateful.

When using recovery media Acronis only knows about backup on the PC itself (it does a scan of the PC) and Acronis Cloud, it does not use the Acronis data base on the PC.

Sometime ATI has trouble identifying NAS on the LAN. You could try manually entering the NAS, either using its name or possibly its IP address (I have not tried the latter). For example, for Synology Diskstation you would enter:

//DISKSTATION/

You should then be prompted for user name and password.

Hope this helps

If Acronis only knows about the backups on the PC itself, how do I specify that it should look elsewhere?

but where would I enter that?  I have found no place to specify a path to the backup files.

Christopher, you should be seeing a File name: entry field at the bottom of the Recover panel where it is asking you to Browse for Location of the file you want to recover from.

Start typing in the network address for your NAS in this field, i.e. //DISKSTATION/  and it should allow you to find the network resource.

See document: How to connect to a NAS drive using WinPE Rescue Media.PDF which shows using the above technique from the alternative WinPE rescue media.
