How to setup backup to USB Drive - one is connected, one is in the safe

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I would like to do something very simple that worked fine with Acronis 2014 but is not in later version.

What I simply want to do is setting up a backup task to an fixed USB Driveletter - lets say "E". I want to setup a backup task to this drive and weekly exchange it with another USB drive.

How is this possible with Acronis 2015/2016 without errors and "ignore" messages ?

Using 2015 or 2016, each target disk will need its own individual backup task.  Reference link next

Using 2 different target disks for TrueImage backup.

Assigning a specific drive letter is a good idea but it would be better if the drive letter was chosen from a seletion of letterw, such as x or y or z.

Each target disk should have its own drive letter.   Whatever target disk is attached would be the matched backup task for that disk.

Yeah, that was my assumption. And of course it will not get any errors if one of the 2 disks is not attached when runnig the tasks.....In my opinion this is a severe step backwards, both in funtionality and in comfort. In times of crypto viruses it will be a good idea NOT to have attached your USB disk and change them daily to keep the risk at a minimum. We already have had customers with that kind of viruses and of course the virus enrypted the Acronis Backup files too - not to mention dropbox etc.

My solution will be to create a good old batch jobs to copy the images from the internal backup disk to the usb drive - then the customer do not have to care for job handling. Well, there are programs around that are fully batchable and it might lead us away from acronis....

Another hot shot is the "single Version" feature. In older versions of acronis it kept its name f.i. "pcsave.tib" and was overwritten next time the backup took place. Now its changing the name which will of course lead to more work in the batch file design to copy the save to another location.

Hopefully they are rethinking their gui and featurelist and we will keep up with acronis like the last 15 years...

PS: Pls move this annoying cloud start screen to an option

Is this really the only solution ????

Manually enable and disable schedules for usb backup cannot be the goal...

Hi Marco,

You shoulld send your ideas for changes to Acronis.  Here is a link.

My comments are those of a user and Acronis rarely ever reads the forum which is a community type form.

Most every response you see here is from a volunteer user--not Acronis.

You should investigate version 11.5 as it is a business version and may have your options already included.

Coming back to this topic - ACRONIS will this be a feature in the 2017 built ? I think in times of ransomware like Locky etc. this is a highly important feature. We have had one customer where the virus encryped all the acronis backup files on the second internal hdd. So, please make this possible - and for our customer - Acronis or whatever cloud is NO option. You already did it before - forget about that databased backup and come back to the old systme. Looking arround we were not the only ones whishing back those really basic but essential features....

Marco, we currently have no information on what changed / new features may be included in ATIH 2017 - this has not yet been announced and there has been no Beta phase announced to allow any preview.

In terms of virus protection, especially from ransomware / encryption viruses - then this goes well beyond the realm of only the Acronis backup software being used.

Each computer system has to have strong measures in place to prevent these types of virus infections, and in particular, to prevent them from spreading throughout the system and across network shares.  This includes the use of sensible user privileges, i.e. do not use full Administrator access for standard users who do not need this; the maintenance of the Windows OS and all installed programs / applications to ensure all known weaknesses or exploits are patches by the latest levels of code fixes; very careful use of network shares with restrictions on standard user access, and no standard user access to NAS backup drives / folders.  For the latter you should have a dedicated NAS user for the Acronis backup target drive which is only ever used within the ATIH application for the backup task credentials.  That dedicated NAS user should not be used for any other purpose than Acronis backups.

None of the above can be coded into the Acronis application as every customer computer and network environment is unique.  For commercial customers, then there needs to be strong active firewalls, email virus scanning, web site filtering etc.

I totally agree with all mentioned measures but not all customers do have a NAS but what we want is an easy solution for changing portable media. In Acronis 2010 you could setup, as an example, an incremental backup job pointing to e:\dailysave\.

You made the file structure on any wanted usb drive and TI was doing its job. If there already was a backup, it made the incremental file and if not it did a Fullbackup. This was perfekt. If any media was full you could just delete the entire folder content and backup was starting from scratch. Needles to say that we setup always two backup folders per media.

There was no intervention necessaray and you could tell your customer even on the phone what to do. Try this with TI 2015 and higher....

So, I don`t want Acronis to save me form virsues etc. I just want a very handy feature back - that of course already was existing - without changing to Acronis B&R Workstation.
