How Is Total Size of Backup Computed

Thread needs solution

After a full backup has been completed, the top line on the Acronis screen will show Date/Time of Last Backup and Total Size. Is this size a compressed size?

The reason I ask..........I just did a backup of my C drive contents, which total 214.8GB. However, the Total Size shown on the Acronis screen is only 134.6GB. Does this sound about right.

Hi Durago,

Yes, could be.  Total size is compressed and roughly 30% smaller than the original data is normal.  You can shrink that size further as a backup in Windows has default exclusions which include hiberfile.sys and pagefile.sys which can be quite large, but necessary for a full disk image.  Those will eat up space on your C: drive, putting more in use than would be needed in teh backup.  You may also be using Windows system protection to store VSS snapshots of restore points and previous versions of files on our C: drive too.  Those are excluded in your backups with the default exclusion settings as well.  If you want the closest thing to an exact copy of Windows when backups are done with Windows running, remove all exclusions, except for hiberfile.sys and pagefile.sys.

Bobbo, thanks for the response. And sorry for the delay in getting back with you.....I was out of town today.

That's the info I needed.

Glad to help!
