How will windows think it is authentic?

Thread needs solution

Hey all, I use ATI and am about to get another computer.

I want the hard drives on the new computer to be an exact image of the old computer.

I am using windows 7. (And want to remain using windows 7)

If I get the new computer, and restore the images I have on the hard drive of the new computer, how will windows think that it is authentic?  Anyone have any experience doing something like this?

Seems like a basic task but the windows copy protection will probably go nuts at this.

Thanks

Brian - you have two options to try - assuming you are not using an OEM license which is tied to the hardware regardless.  Wish I would have remembered Joey's response first to test out.  These are both from the same thread.

For Windows 7, you will need the retail version. An OEM version should not activate, but you can try...

When you restore the image to the new computer, you will need to activate Windows. Because of the change of hardware, either it goes automatically fine, or you have to call Microsoft support automated activation system. You will have to enter your license key. Although the process is fastidious it should work. If it doesn't work, you should talk to an customer service agent and explain the situation. They might activate it for you.

I have done this process a couple of times with Windows 7 without a hitch, but with retail versions.
