Increase Partition Sizes when Restoring From True Image Backup

Thread solved

About four years ago I bought a Western Digital 4 TB My Book external drive to backup my computer.  It came with Acronis True Image WD edition software. I believe it is the 2016 version as the chm files display ATI OEM 2016 in the title when opened.

The drive in my computer is a San Disk SSD 128 GB (SDSSDP-128G-G25).  I am getting low on space so I want to replace the drive with a new drive that is a larger SSD, the HP SSD S750 512GB.

Attached is a screen capture of my partitions.  All I want to do is restore from an Acronis True Image backup to my new drive and make the two middle partitions larger. (C: 77.97 GB NTFS and the 35.38 GB partition which runs Linux as this is a dual boot system.)  This seems pretty simple and straight forward but I can't seem to do it.

My understanding is that with True Image software I should be able to recover to a new drive and it will automatically resize the partitions to the larger drive or give me the choice of specifying the size of each partition.  Is that correct? But it looks like I can't seem to do that with the software I have.

The Recovery Wizard allows me to specify a partition size in Specify Recovery Settings but it does not allow a size larger than the existing size the backup has.

Can you tell what I need to do to enlarge the two middle partitions?  Thank you.

Rather that worrying about resizing partitions with ATI, I would use MiniTool Partition Wizard free to resize them once the recovery has been made to the new SSD.

I suspect ATI cannot dynamically adjust the size of Linux partitions, which may be related to the way in which they are backed up.

Thank you for your response, Ian.  I tried the MiniTool Partition Wizard free software and for the 35.38 GB Linux Ext4 partition the Extend Partition option was not present.  For the 77.97 GB NTFS partition (C:) the option was there but when executed returned "MiniTool Partition Wizard Free cannot extend the specified partition. Not enough free space."

I am tired and may not be thinking clearly. Have you tried booting Linux, and using Linux to resize the partitions. I need to think on this and get some sleep. Hopefully someone will have a solution.

I don't see a way to do it with fdisk and I am not familiar with the other Linux partitioning tools.

The True Image help file I have indicates that with cloning the software will resize partitions proportionally if you clone to a larger disk and also will allow you to specify partition sizes if you don't want to do that.

Do you know if that is available with the ATI version?  I assume not since the ATI version doesn't allow that feature for restores.  (I can't get that far with the Cloning feature since I don't have both drives installed.  I would need to get another cable to have them both installed.)

Dave, in Linux, use the Gparted tool for resizing partitions but best to do so after booting from a Live distro of Linux.

Thanks for the information, Steve.  I think I can get it to work with the information and tools from the links you provided.

Wanted to let the forum know I was able to get those two middle partitions resized after restoring to the new drive. (See attached image for what I have now and before.)  Thank you.
