Installer for ATI 2016 crashes on Win XP

I recently upgraded to ATI 2016. It has upgraded successfully on two laptops running Win 7. Then I went to try to upgrade it on a Win XP SP3 (yes, we still use it) machine. The documentation says that this is a supported OS for ATI 2016.

First I uninstalled ATI 11, then tried to install ATI 2016. The installer was a copy I had made and put on a thumb drive.

When I tried to run the installer, I got a Microsoft error dialog saying that Install had "encountered a problem", and it would not start. What might the problem be?

This sounds like local system issue.    Acronis may say it supports XP, but Microsoft doesn't even support it (not for the past 2 years) so as it becomes older and older, you're going to find more and  more compatibility issues, especially with no current Microsoft updates and security patches, allowing malicious stuff to have a better shot at disrupting the machine.  

Let's assume your legacy XP machine is in absolute prestine shape though... Go back and make sure there is no Acronis items in control panel.  Run the ATIH 2015 cleanup tool after that.   Go back to these directories and look for any Acronis folders that might still be there and delete the Acronis directories if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Acronis, C:\Program Files\Common\Acronis, C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis, C:\Program Files (x86)\Common\Acronis, C:\Programdata\Acronis

REBOOT

After reboot, log into your Acronis account and download the latest version of the ATIH2016 installer to be certain you have the most recent version and to ensure that the installer is not getting corrupted as you've previously transferred it to another drive on previous attempts.  When you launch it in Windows, make sure you are running as a local adminisrator - if possible, disable your AV and/or firewall before the install as well.  If it fails to install after that, it's going to be too difficult to pinpoint the exact cause on your unique system.
