The last backup has failled message

Thread needs solution

The last two backups that I've made with Acronis 2016 has ended in the message:

"The last backup has failed.  Failed to exclusively access backup F:\My backup\Windows 8 Laptop/Lenovo Laptop_full_b5_s1_v1.tib during consolidation."

I assume all my backups are useless if they end with this message.  I have tried to backup to two different types of media with the same message.  Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Hi Ricky,

For this error Enchantech has previously recommended that one not do automatic validation as part of the backup task (if currently set to do do).  If that option is selected, remove it and run the backup again and see what happens.  If it works, then run the validation manually afterwards.

I"m not sure if the existing backups are useless.  I imagine they are OK, but just failing to validate for some reason because of a bug (on some insalls) where this occurs if validation is turned on automatically as part of the backup task.

For what it's worth, I never validate in Acronis.  I just occassionally mount the backup .tib (right click and "mount") and if that works, I know the backup is good.

Thanks for the reply.  I checked the default setup and automatic validation is not on.  I've ran the backup on a portable harddrive and a large thumb drive with the same results, so I know it's not a problem with the media that I'm using for the destination backup.  I'll just assume the backups are okay, and hope I don't have to use one.  Kind of gives you an uneasy feeling though.

Any chance you're using the same drive letter for these backups in the settings?  Acronis does not handle multiple drives with the same backup task and also doesn't work well if the drive had an original volume letter (let's say D:) and it gets assigned another drive letter (let's say E:)

Basically, to be sure, make sure that both the Thumb drive and external USB drive have their own unique drive letter and that they match the drive letter that the backup task for each piece of hardware was originally setup as.

Also don't use the same name for different backups - each should be unique (just in case).

If you're up for testing, I would create 2 new backup tasks, each with a unique name that doesn't match the other, nor any other backup name that has been previously used.  Make sure each backup tasks points to only one speific drive and that that drive letter is unique on both pieces of hardware too.  You can set the drive letter for the flash drive and external drive in disk managment and should consider setting them to something further down the alphabet so that Acronis doesnt' have the opportunity to try and use a different letter of its own choosing (perhaps N and O would be good since they're not easy to confuse and a good way down the alphabet).  Then run each backup again and see if the validation error still occurs or not
