Move system partition to smaller SSD

Thread needs solution

I currently have a 320GB drive in my notebook which has Win10 installed. Additionally there was Ubuntu installed and half of the drive used for Windows, other half for Ubuntu. Also the bootloader GRUB was installed to toggle between these two OS.

The new ssd has a capacitiy of 120GB and I only need to keep the windows partition. There are currently just 80GB used so it should fit on the new SSD. But how to do this? Any help appreciated.

Alex, I would recommend that you should first create a Windows 10 Recovery drive so that you can use it later if it is needed - see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-10/create-a-recovery-drive

Next you need to create a backup image of your Windows 10 partition on an external drive to use for the restore on to the new SSD later.

Where is your GRUB bootloader installed to?
If it is installed to the MBR then you could possibly include the MBR in your Windows 10 image and continue to use GRUB on the SSD without the Ubuntu partiton, though you would need to edit the configuration to remove reference to Ubuntu.
If GRUB is installed on the Ubuntu partition, then you will need the Windows 10 Recovery drive to 'repair' your restored Windows partition to create the necessary Boot Configuration Description BCD files to enable it to boot.

You should also have a tested and working Acronis Recovery media on CD or USB that you know will see your internal drive.

The next step will be to remove the current 320GB internal drive, set it aside, and install the new 120GB SSD drive.

Now boot from the ATIH Recovery media and confirm that you can access both the SSD and the external drive with your Windows 10 backup image - if all is OK, then restore the image to the SSD and allow it to be resized to fit.

Finally, remove the recovery media and boot from the Windows 10 Recovery drive to perform the boot repair.

Thank you very much for the detailed answer. GRUB is installed in MBR. I will try to keep it then as it might help out to boot from the internal SD card reader if neccessary. ATIH and Win10 media are being prepared already.

So i guess I'm good to go and give it a try tomorrow :)
