NAS Storage Credentials

Thread solved

Hi All,

I have a raspberry Pi 4 with a USB-Harddisk.

I have a Windows 10 PC with Acronis True Image 2016

On the raspberry I formatted the USB-Harddisk as ext4 and shared it with samba.

I want to backup my Windows PC to the samba share, so far nothing complicated and normal stuff.

But I have some details I would like to clarify because this backup is only and mainly to project my data against encryption malware that could hit my Windows 10 pc:

- The Raspberry will not be online all time, just for the backup-window

- The Samba user and password are not the same as the windows user. (this sucks but is important)

- The Samba share is never mounted by Windows (at least not manually by me)

These configurations, I hope, will prevent the malware from encrypting the TIBs in my samba-share, in the case that the raspberry is online for some case (let it be maintenance or just not having it shutdown after the last backup) during the event of the malware execution.

One last question I have is: where does ATI store the credentials for the NAS / Samba shares?

I believe that if ATI uses the windows key store, then malware should be able to retrieve these informations, but I didn't see it there. How and where does ATI store those crendentials? I hope they are stored encrypted and not lying around in somewhere in clear-text.

Thanks for you help

Michael

Hello Michael,

thank you for your posting! The article https://kb.acronis.com/content/58004 should give you the required information about stored NAS credentials.

Thanks, your knowledge base is really good. As if you guys know what the customers are looking for.

From what I read in the KB I should be able to get away without saving the credentials in windows.

My open question would be if I can mount the backup from the NAS via the graphical interface of ATI or is mounting on possible via right-click in the explorer?

Hi Michael, thank you for your kind feedback - shared with the KB team!

Yes, mounting option is only available from the Windows Explorer

What a petty. Aren't you guys concerned about randsome ware encrypting your backups?

Michael, this comment confuses me. Maybe I am missing something.

Since the release of ATI 2018 all versions have built-in protection that is designed to prevent malware from attacking backups. (It was first introduced in the subscription version of ATI 2017.)
