Need guidance on ATIH 2016 and help on Cloud

Thread needs solution

Hi Everyone.

I have ATIH 2016, recently ugraded. I use it on a laptop running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I currently backup locally to my NAS (a Netgear ReadyNAS 4200). I keep all backups in \\mynas\backup. I also have a \\mynas\media which contains photo and video files. My main laptop HDD is divided into 3 partitions: system, mydata and mystorage.

1. I have created local backups of the 3 partitions, but somehow, for the love of pete, I have not done a backup of \\mynas\media. Can I do this too? Can I backup NAS partitions to another NAS partition on the same NAS?

2. Lately, I have been thinking of  having my backups in the cloud as an added safety measure. But I need a little help with how the process works so I can understand things better. I have questions like: Do I backup directly to the cloud or can I just continue with my local backups to \\mynas\backup and then do a sync of this drive to the cloud? Or are they separate, i.e., local backup and cloud backup? Can I also sync the \\mynas\media directly to the Cloud? Is there somewhere on this forum to find cloud backup scenarios/examples?

I am also in the process of encrypting the 3 partitions of my main HDD, using Truecrypt. I believe that I will need to do a sector-by-sector backup of these partitions using my Acronis Rescue Media. Will I be able to sync these partitions to the Cloud?

Thanks.

Hello CMaker3, welcome to these user forums - I will try to answer you points below:

1. Yes, you can backup your NAS partitions by configuring these as the Source data for a backup task then setting a different location (local or NAS or Cloud) for the Destination where the backup will be stored.  You will be asked to provide the credentials needed for accessing these locations.

2.  Acronis Cloud is a subscription service whereby you purchase the subscription for a year then renew when the time comes round to do so.  To backup to the Cloud, you simply select Cloud as the Destination for where your backup(s) will be stored.  Backups to the Cloud are done from the computer which is running the Acronis software and has a valid license & subscription to the Cloud storage.

You can and should create both local and Cloud backups of your data, as if you let your Cloud subscription lapse, all your data held in the Cloud will be deleted after 30 days.  Also the performance of using the Cloud will be significantly slower than using a local backup source / target.  The speed of upload to the Cloud is controlled by your broadband provider service and is normally significantly less than your download speed rating, i.e. my own broadband service allows me to download at upto 70MBs but my upload speed is around only 5MBs.  If you have a lot of data to upload this can take a very long time to create the initial full backup image in the Cloud, measured in days or weeks!  This should also be born in mind for when any recovery from the Cloud is needed.

You can backup your NAS shares to the Cloud, but you will be doing so via your computer running ATIH 2016 not directly from the NAS - there is no current provision from Acronis to allow a direct NAS to Acronis Cloud backup.

See KB document: 48500: Acronis True Image: Using Cloud Storage

3.  Truecrypt encryption.  If you encrypt your 3 partitions with Truecrypt then provided you can still run ATIH from within Windows running on the encrypted drives, then your backups will be unencrypted and stored as such either locally, on your NAS or in the Cloud.  This is because Acronis will not 'see' any encryption in this scenario.

If you are considering creating offline backups of your encrypted partitions using the Acronis bootable rescue media then the ability to do so will depend on how your encrypted partitions are presented to the Acronis software - if no recognisable partitions are found by Acronis then you may not be able to do even a sector by sector backup.

See KB document: 56619: Acronis True Image 2016: Compatibility with BitLocker which states:

You cannot back up encrypted disks in Acronis bootable media, please install the product on your computer.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for the reply.

I am certainly going to do what you suggested in reply to my first question. The fee for the Acronis Cloud does not come cheap compared to other cloud services like Crashplan, to name one.

As for Truecrypt, I tried to do a sector-by-sector backup of one of my encrypted non-system drives and today I finally received my external hdd and I recovered the backup in there. I then mounted it and used  FreeFileSync to compare the 2 directories and the results are "perfect". I hope that it will work the same for my encrypted system drive.

The only problem that I forsee with the encrypted drives is that I can only perform it using a Single Version Scheme because it copies the whole drive including the unallocated space. And this takes a lot of space. And my 3 encrypted drives are going to need about 685GB of storage space and I can imagine that it will take forever to transfer them to the cloud. And it will be time consuming to do the Single Backups every time, let alone transferring them to the cloud. I'll have to think about this.

Again, thanks and have a great week.
