Need help with email notification setup with gmail smtp server

Thread needs solution

I am using Acronis 2016 for Windows with Windows 10. I followed this article https://kb.acronis.com/content/32135 which describes using smtp.gmail.com server to send email from Acronis, but test emails fail to send.

I am sending to a msn.com account. Any suggestions for what i need to make notifications work?

Hi Bobby,

This seems to be a system-wide issue right now.  Read the thread titled "Notifications" here.  Email notifications have failed for many users starting 1/31/2016 across all versions of True Image, 2010 to date.

Hi Bobby,

Some people are saying they are having problems with gmail notifications, I receive mine every morning when ATIH 2016 runs every morning, here is my setup, of course user would be changed to your gmail name screenshot

Hope that helps,

i am using the same settintg. I thought i had a firewall issue but i stopped Kaspersky internet security i use, the test email still doesn't send

thanks

is this outage mentioned somewhere? Why would it be an Acronis True Image problem, if i am using the PC version not the cloud version

Thanks

B

Ok, got email notifications working, using smtp.live.com, the smtp.gmail.com settings won't work for me from within Acronis TrueImage 2016, this is what I did.

From a CMD window, I used telnet to test if i could connect to smtp.live.com on PORT 587, and i could see the results below

telnet smtp.live.com 587

220 BLU436-SMTP195.smtp.hotmail.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 8.0.9200.16384 ready at  Sat, 6 Feb 2016 20:30:50 -0800

the above displays a successful connection to the SMTP server below is a test HELO

HELO
250 BLU436-SMTP195.smtp.hotmail.com Hello [172.90.175.216]

and I got a response.

using telnet to connect to smtp.gmail.com 587 also works, but not from within Acronis no matter what port i picked, very strange.

so my server settings in Acronis are

Server Settings: smtp.live.com

Port is 587

Encryption is TLS,   every time I pick TLS for Encryption the port would switch back to 465, I had to manually enter 587

I entered my SMTP authentication and the email test worked.

Thanks everyone, case closed

Nice work ferreting that out, Mr. Ramirez!

For me however, the case is not closed.  I have many client machines spread over a wide area and changing the Notifications setup on each machine would take many days of uncompensated consultant time.  Not going there.  Instead, for me, either Acronis fixes it or I begin migrating my client base to different backup software.

Macrium Reflect is looking better every day this loss of functionality continues.  It's been a week now.

I am running Acronis True Image 2016 and tried port 587 and TLS and I still get the same result?  It fails........I am using AT&T as my Email host!

AT&T

POP3 accounts, the Incoming server (POP3) is port 995, the checkbox for This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is selected, and the Outgoing server (SMTP) is port 465.

For a business solution i use Backup Exec 2012. I used to back up a lot of clients but not any longer. I've used it for years, you will still need an SMTP relay solution I have an in-house Exchange server and have not problems with notifications from any of my hardware, even printers.

Try different SMTP relays, besides google. You could open a free live.msn account and use the same settings that are working for me.

I am using Acronis 2016 at home only, but I have used Acronis at work but not with PC clients.

did you try using telnet to make sure the port is open on your PC? you could open a free live.com account and use the same settings i am using for an SMTP relay.

It is not just my PC!  it is every PC I support.  It makes no difference whether it is a lan, network, what email provider you use, it just quit working on all!

I bought Acronis and recommended it for what it did and not for what it will now not do.  I do not intend to find work arounds.  If I have to do that then I will go to another backup product not only for myself but sugest another product for my clients if they will believe me after this.  I still have hope Acronis will find the problem because something happened to make it stop working and not only on my personal network.

If it was just my PC and Router, it would be one thing, but for a client on another platform across the country using a different provider, that woulld be a strange situation.

How frustrating!  Odd that it's working for me.  My notification address is in the att.net domain, fwiw.   And I totally agree:

CASE IS NOT CLOSED!

I've got the same issue on 2 pc's with TI 2013. Stopped working on 1 PC 2/1/16, 2nd pc 2/2/16. I issued the command telnet smtp.yahoo.com 465 and got connecting to  smtp.yahoo.com, so the port isn't blocked. In TI 2013 notification screen I tried the following encryption options

none 25 authentication error

ssl 465  or 587 network error immediately

tls 465 mail server error after a minute or so.

tls 587 worked.

Using thunderbird email client i can still send email using 465 with ssl/tls indicated. But the 465 and ssl/tls are comments on the screen, so i'm not sure what thunderbird is doing.

beyond me what is going on but mayube someone with more netowking knowledge can comment and possibly help others with the similar problem

Add me to the list of att.net users whose email notifications have stopped.  I also note I cannot change port to 587. It reverts back to 465.  I have use Acronic for many years and they always seem to have trouble getting email notifications to work in many of their releases!

Joe,

I have voiced my concern/complaint as many times and ways as I know how.  All is get back is to buy a Pay for Incident message and they will be glad to fix the problem.  I responded back, does this mean I pay for the incident and everyone else who runs your software has to pay for this same incident also?

I never received a response back from that question as all I received back was wanting me to purchase a Pay Per Incident again and they could and would be glad to fix it.  All users should not have to purchase a pay for incident for the same incident which Acronis caused.

I am out of options.  I have had suggestions to set use a GMAIL setup to get around this.  I can do that for myself on my 5 PC's but I can't go to all my clients and have them set up a GMAIL account with appropriate settings and then go to another place to check the status of their backup everyday.  We backup our PC's everyday as we all have the space and I limit it to no more than 3 backups.

Thanks for the info Joe!

David

Another one of my pc's started to fail on sending emails. I tried what had worked earlier, change to TLS, then change to 587 but it didn't work - network error. So then I tried TLS if possible and again changed the port to 587 - that is working for now. I've noticed every time you change the encryption, you need to go back and set the port to 587. I also use extended settings and have 2 differnet email addresses - to and from. Both my email addresses are yahoo.

I'm using TI 2013 so I know that the bug will never be fixed although from what I've seen from Acronis, they stopped fixing bugs years ago. I refuse to downgrade to TI 2016. The removasl of 2 features in the newer version is a deal breaker for me. They no longer allow run number in the file name so a file name sort of the director is not in chronological order. The full and incr/diff versions are no longer chronological. And a history of logs is no longer maintained locally. Now a real problem when you email doesn't get sent. You are forced to try to decipher the XML logs.
