Need help to restore an image disk on a tablet PC with a single USB port
Hello everybody, I would appreciate some support on the following.
I am running Windows 10 X64 1703 and I use Acronis True Image 2016 6595. I made a full image disk for my tablet PC ( a Sony Vaio Tab 11) on a an external SSD for this PC (which has a single built in SSD) and I created too a start up support WINPE with Acronis plug in (not sure it is the correct name as my PC speaks French... but I am sure you will understand) on a USB Key. I tested this key after having created it and ti worked, even giving me access to the wifi keyboard which is part of this tablet PC.
My question: I need to restore my Tablet PC and I am a bit puzzled on how to proceed for the following reason: This tablet PC has only one USB port, so if I am able to boot on the Acronis start-up USB key, how do I proceed to connect my external SSD?
I see nowhere an option to remove the USB key... Should I make a hot unplug (and take the risk to kill my key?...) or should I just assume the program is no longer trying to access the key when I am on the screen to browse for an image?
Next question should be easier: the WPEINIT launches the Acronis recovery program, but it is in English... Is there a language selection somewhere? I would appreciate to put it in French.
Last, when you have selected the image disk on the external SSD, where to click on the Recovery Assistant to start the recovery ?
Hope to read you soon.
Guy

Guy, another option for creating your WinPE Rescue Media to use your native French language is to create the media using the MVP Custom ATI WinPE Builder tool - this has an option that will allow you to use your system language. See the link in my signature / the MVP User Tools in the Useful Links column on the right.

Hello Steve, first of all a big thank you to come to this post.
I followed your advises and made the following tries, here are the results :
The KB4469 suggest to hit Ctrl+Shift when WinPE is loaded : this has no effect on my tablet PC... I tried with the left then the right keys but the result is the same: nothing
I assume I have properly followed the steps, they say :
To change the keyboard layout and language in Acronis Bootable Media do the following:
- Boot from Acronis Bootable Media;
- When booted, start the product from Acronis Bootable Media;
- Press Ctrl-Shift.
I boot on my "Support de Demarrage Acronis" USB key, which I think is the "Acronis Bootable Media", it opens a DOS screen then starts automatically WinPE.
On the WinPE screen I see nowhere to change language (or keyboard), and the Ctrl+Shift has no effect...
Regarding your other suggestions, I tried to place this Acronis Bootable Media on a powered hub where I connected my SSD too, but when I start the Tablet PC it doesn't find any bootable media...
Last, my Acronis True Image 2016 is a French version and I created my Acronis Bootable Media using in the Tools tab the option "generateur de support de secours" , where I selected Support WINPE avec Plug-in Acronis. As my version is a French one I would have assumed to have a USB key created in French, or at least to find somewhere an option to select language... but I didn't find any.
If you have another suggestion it will be very welcome!
Maybe you can point me to a link to download a file to create the USB key with the correct language and keyboard?
Thank you again.
Guy
EDIT: Regarding the "MVP Custom ATI WinPE Builder tool", I have seen the link in your signature box. It looks quite powerful, but I would prefer first to try to solve my problem inside my Acronis True Image 2016, as it looks a bit complex to me and as I go on holidays end of this week I don't feel very confident to learn how to master it before...

Guy, the MVP Custom ATI WinPE Builder tool is actually very easy to use and the end result is to give you the same Acronis True Image application running in the WinPE environment.
If you can build WinPE media using the Acronis Rescue Media Builder tool, then you have all the requisites for using the MVP tool.
The steps needed are as follows:
Download the MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v111.zip file (72MB in size) and extract this to the root of your C: drive where you also have the WinPE (Windows ADK) installed.
Run the MVP_ATIPEBuilder.exe as Administrator then follow the prompts shown, one of which is to create the media using your System language. Most of the prompts are obvious and you can choose the option you need to take.

Steve, I have downloaded the MVP_ATIPEBuilder, extracted it in the root of my C: drive and I am running it with Admin priviledge.
One question: it asks me if I want to map a networkshare in WinPE. I answered "Yes", then the program warn me to ensure that I have updated "map.cmd" in the "MappedDrive" folder of the MVP_ATIPEBuilder application before proceeding...
I am not very familiar to this, could you please advise?
Tks
Guy
Edit: Because my holidays count down is running fast, I have continued my tries and this is what I get.
1) I answered "Yes", to this question and continued.
2) I was then asked : Would you like to to map a networkshare in WinPE. I answered "Yes", then the program warn me to ensure that I have updated "map.cmd" in the "MappedDrive" folder of the MVP_ATIPEBuilder application before proceeding... Here I didn't understand exactly what the program was expecting.
3) At the step “Mounting amd64 winpe.wim file, I got error : 3 Le chemin specifié est introuvable (the program was not able to find the path). Le journal DISM se trouve à l’emplacement C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log
4) Next message was telling Please insure that you have added custom 64-bit drivers to the “Drivers_Custom\x64” folder in the PEBuilder application before proceeding. IRST drivers are already available. It is recommended to include other custom RAID controller and/or NIC drivers. I answered "Yes"
5) Would you like to add MSiScsi support? Yes
6) Would you like to add Bitlocker support? Yes
Here I got an Error : 32
Une erreur s’est produit en essayant d’accéder à l’image. (the program was not able to access the image and pointed me one more time to the logThen I made a mistake (sorry): I was asked to answer the letter of the USB Bootable Key and I answered D instead of D: . Unfortunately there is no option to change an entry...
Then the program continued asking me if I wanted to build a CD/DVD, here of course I answered “no”, as this computer is a Tablet PC which has no CD/DVD Drive and then the program just ended…
I tried to launch it again but I faced a lot of error messages. I assume I needed to make some clean-up before restarting it again?
In fact the program is nicely written as it finds there are already some data that need to be cleaned up, unfortunately if the clean-up completed successufuly, when I restared the process I got lot of errors.
This is what I got:
Existing DISM mount points have been detected. In order to proceed, these must be cleaned up. Cleaning up old DISM mount now. Please be patient.
Please select one of the following options: Build Customized 64-bit Acronis WinPE Rescue Media
Map Network: This time I answered : no
Mounting amd64 winpe.wim file. Error 3 Le chemin spécifié est introuvable (cannot find the path)
We’ve detected that your system is not using English as the default language. Would you like WinPE using your system language? I answered "Yes".
Then came the following error:
Error : 0xc1510115. L’image spécifiée n’est pas valide. Démontez l’image ou nettoyez le Gestionnaire d’images Windows, puis réessayez (The found image is not valid, unmount the image or clean-up the Windows Image Manager, then try again...
Here I don't know what to do...
Maybe you can help me to go thru.
Thank you
Guy

Guy, the map a network share is only needed if you are intending to access such a share when running the WinPE Rescue Media and will have a wired network connection on your computer.
In the Mapped Drive subfolder for the MVP builder, you will see the file MAP.CMD which if you open in Notepad will show the following help text:
echo.
REM --> Down below, enter the CORRECT information for your network share.
REM --> Items needed - NAS IP Address, NAS share name, NAS username and NAS password
REM --> Example: net use Z: \\192.168.1.100 (<--NAS IP) \AcronisBackups (<--NAS share name) /user:USERNAME (<--NAS username) PASSWORD (<--NAS password)
@echo on
net use Z: \\192.168.1.100\Acronis_Backup_Share /user:USERNAME PASSWORD
You would need to edit the above net use Z: line to point to the IP address and share name of your own network drive / NAS plus also provide the user credentials
I haven't bothered to use this feature of the media to date as have been able to connect to my Synology NAS without mapping a drive in this way.

Guy, please take a look at the log below from my last use of the MVP builder tool which shows what options I took, then look at the log on your own system in the Logs folder for the tool (where this came from on my computer).

Well, your log is nice : short and clean, mine is very long and looks a bit ugly.
Is there a way to clean it and start properly the process from scratch?
And in before this, is there a way to "unmount the image or clean-up the Windows Image Manager" as I was requested by the program during my last try?
Guy.

Steve, I need to leave my screen for a short appointment (1h). I reconnect as soon as I am back.
I looked at my log:
In fact, I get error at each step, maybe I do not have the right prereq to run the program:
I am on a Windows 10x64 1703 tablet PC with Acronis True Image 2016 installed
I have unzippez MVP_ATIPEBuilder_v111 in the root of my C: drive (by the way I have a single SSD drive on this PC)
And on this drive I have the WinPE program at location C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome\WinPE
Is this correct?
- Log in to post comments

Guy, the builder tool is self-cleaning as far as it can be.
Do you have the Windows 10 ADK installed? This is the main prerequisite and is found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\ etc.
- Log in to post comments

Hello again Steve, I am back,
I checked in the path I can read on your screen capture and I have the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessement and Deployment Kit. I think this is it, correct?

While you probably investigate, I am making some additionnal basic tries and here are the result:
I deleted the dism.log file (as it is created for each run and I launched the program. I get first a message after the system scan telling : "Existing DISM mount points have been detected. In order to proceed, these must be cleaned up. Cleaning up old DISM mount pointnow. Please be patient".
This looks great, except that if I look at the look, there are some error messages.
I am not very familiar with the content, however there is a first section " <---- Starting Dism.exe session ----> and ending by <----- Ending Dism.exe session ----> In this section I can see Successful step, except the lats DISM Provider Store PID=11180 TID= 2760 There is a possible 32-bit versus 64 bits cross architecture issue with the provider then next line "Failed to load the provider : C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Deployment Tools\AMD64\DISM\\SiloedPackageProvider.dll"
The fisrt error lines are below "Try to initialize Panter logging 1 times, last error 0x0. this line appears 3 time, then the section ends by DISM Manager : PID=1520 TID=4448 Succefully created the local image session and provider store.
Then again I have a section " <---- Starting Dism.exe session ---->"
In this one, I find after a command Image UnmarshallHandle : Reconstituing Wim at C:\Users\Guy\AppData\Local\Temp\MBM-VOU-PBS-WBT-IOA-N3N-PCG-EO\PE\media\sources\boot.wim
Error DISM DISM WIM Provider: PID=1520 [WIMCloseWIM: (2845)-> Fail to flush file buffers C:\Users\Guy\AppData\Local\Temp\MBM-VOU-PBS-WBT-IOA-N3N-PCG-EO\PE\media\sources\boot.wim (HRESULT=0x800700006) - CWimManager: : WimProviderMsgCallback

Then few lines below : Warning DISM DISM Win Provider : PID=1520 [WIMDeleteImageMounts : 996) -> Error unmounting image C:\Users\Guy\AppData\Local\Temp\MBM-VOU-PBS-WBT-IOA-N3N-PCG-EO\PE\mount(HRESULT=0xC1420117) - CWimManager: : WimProviderMsgCallback

Badly formated drive string : D:\. This drive will not be cleaned.
Image session has been closed. Reboot required=no
<----- Ending Dism.exe session ---->
This sequence looks to take place many time.
For your information, this is a single SSD Tablet PC, the D: drive is the USB Key to which I want to create my Recovery Boot, which currently contains an Acronis Startup Boot.
I stop here, maybe you have posted a reply already

Additional try : (hope this will help you to understand what's happening...)

Last before diner: I tried to continue the process and arrived to the language selection:
I got here too errors that I didn't have during my initial try.
It see lots of failing references to the image C:\Users\Guy\AppData\Local\Temp\MBM-VOU-PBS-WBT-IOA-N3N-PCG-EO\
Would it be possible to delete it? It seems to be protected, maybe it has to be unmonted before, but I don't know how to proceed...

Guy, sorry for not replying earlier, was engaged with friends for the evening here in the UK so the computer had to be put away!
What architecture is your tablet? Is it 32-bit or 64-bit? I ask because I have come across 32-bit tablets previously. This makes a difference for the choice you need to make at the start of the process.
I haven't seen any previous reports of issues with DISM but am also not an expert in using DISM to understand why these types of errors are being reported?
If you are still making no progress with this matter, then I would suggest to send a PM to Mustang (Paul) and ask him to take a look, he is one of the authors of the MVP tool and has a lot more expertise & knowledge on DISM and the other areas of the tool.

Good evening Steve. I didn't know you were in the UK, so we have nearly the same schedule.
No problem for the time of your response, it's only because I am a bit Under pressure as I have so many things to set-up before my leave.
Yes my Tablet PC (Sony Vaio Tab 11) is a 64-bit architecture (I have double checked this is the Windows Information System screen.
I will certainly make a PM to Paul (probably after my vacation as I have lot of things to handle now), however, maybe you can help me a bit more on this answering two simple questions?
1) I have read in many places of the log and in the MVP tool interface itsef that the current image cannot be unmounted. Could you please tell me where/which command I can use to do so?
2) If I want to go the hard way, how can I delete the C:\Users\Guy\AppData\Local\Temp\MBM-VOU-PBS-WBT-IOA-N3N-PCG-EO\ directory (where it seems this image is located?
Thank you for your help!
Guy

Guy, I can't help you on the DISM unmount question as I don't understand this myself well enough.
For the deleting of your AppData\Local\Temp folder contents, I just tested doing that on my own computer and was able to completely delete everything in that Temp folder with no locks or objections etc.

Steve, I sent a PM to Paul.
Tks for your help.

Guy, please let us know how you get on, am sure there is much for all of us to learn from these exercises in patience!

Steve, of course I will let you know the end result.
I still have got no reply from Paul, is he located in the UK too?

Guy, I think Paul is over the pond in the USA.

This is where I thought he was.
Meanwhile, I have made one additional try to answer my question 2) above:
"2) If I want to go the hard way, how can I delete the C:\Users\Guy\AppData\Local\Temp\MBM-VOU-PBS-WBT-IOA-N3N-PCG-EO\ directory (where it seems this image is located?)"
I started Windows in safe mode and then I was able to delete this directory.
