New computer

Thread needs solution

I currently have Acronis True Image 2016 on my computer, running Win10, and backing up to an external hdd. I have 2 questions:
1 - When I look at the external hdd it appears to have backups dating back over 1 year; does Acronis not automatically overwrite older backups or do I need to delete them?
2 - I am purchasing a new computer; can I simply load the Acronis software on the new computer, connect the external drive and transfer everything to the new computer making the new desktop the same as what I currently have?

Hello, JJ

When you create a backup task, cleanup settings are not enabled by default. This means that True Image does not automatically delete old backups. However, you can enable automatic cleanup rules in the backup options. See this web page for more details.

As to your second questions, you have a couple of options, depending on what you need:

  1. You can perform a full system recovery to the new computer using the Acronis bootable media. You may need to use Acronis Universal Restore for this. In this case you will get an identical copy of your old machine, with all the files and system settings.
  2. You can also simply recover the necessary files (like documents, music, etc.) to the new computer, if it already comes with an operating system preinstalled (or you plan to install it yourself). You can restore files using the bootable media as well, or by installing True Image on the new PC

I hope this answers your questions
