No restore or switch to disk mode in 2016?

Thread needs solution

Just came from 2013, not impressed with 2016. Can't restore a backup tib stored on a server from a PC to an external hard drive to be mounted in another PC unless I create a media recovery flash. Can't have the media recovery boot from an an external USB hard drive, has to be flash. Can no longer switch to disk mode when cloning or restoring a tib file. Can no longer clone or restore a backup to a smaller hard drive when the source drive has less stored on it than the size of the destination hard drive.

Marcus, have you read the online manual and or checked out some of these videos? Some of this is explained in detail in either or both.  The interface has definitely changed since 2013 so you'll want to go over some of these to get familiar with the interface. It's far from perfect - quite a bit dumbed down, but most of what you're looking for is do-able. The rescue media really hasn't changed much at all, other than better driver support.

What's the issue - 2013 backup files are supported - you need to click the \/ icon to the right of the +add backup area and "add existing backup"

I believe this was the same with 2013, no? The work-a-round is to create the bootable media on flash.  Take an image of it and restore to your external USB drive, it will work.  I actually partition my USB drive so there is 1GB at the front for this so boot drive and storage can be on one and can update the media without wiping out the data during the next update of media.

You sure can.  What are you trying to do? A clone, but default is disk mode.  If you go to manual, you can choose partitions and other options.

You sure can. Clone is a bit more restrictive when going from a larger drive to a smaller drive, but if there is enough space and it's not too close, it will work.  Otherwise, taking a backup image and restoring the image to the smaller drive will work just fine too - again though, there has to be enough space and it can't be too close (say within 20%) as it has to leave room for error with overhead, decompression, different sector size, hidden recovery partitions, etc.
