OS drive doesn't appear as an option for a backup

Thread needs solution

I created a USB boot drive so I can take a backup image of the OS on a Western Digital DS5100, which runs Windows Server 2012.

I can boot to the USB drive just fine, but when I try to start a backup, I can't see the actual OS drive.  I can see the USB hard drive and the 4 data drives, but not the OS.

However if I go to the "Add New Disk Wizard" I can see the disk with the OS.  It says "Disk 2- Not Initialized"

I'm afraid to initialize it (and am not even sure which layout option I should use).  Any advice?  I really don't want to mess this OS drive up.

Someone at the DS5100 forum told me I might need to add some RAID drivers.  He gave me a zip that has the following files:

  1. mvs94xx.cat
  2. mvs94xx.inf
  3. mvs94xx.PNF
  4. mvs94xx.sys

How can I add these to the boot usb so that these get loaded?

Michael, you will need to create a Windows PE USB Rescue drive and inject the RAID drivers to that media.  The default Linux based Rescue media does not have any RAID support.

If you don't already have the Windows ADK required for creating WinPE media, then you need to install this first.  The easiest method of doing this is to launch the Acronis Rescue Media Builder tool and select the option to create WinPE media and it will direct you to the Microsoft web site to download the ADK installer.

When installing the ADK, you only need to select the top 3 options shown on the install choices panel, but please note that this is a very large download of around 3GBs.

Once you have the ADK installed, then you can use the MVP Custom ATIPE builder script to create a customised USB Rescue stick with the RAID drivers injected.  See the link to this in my signature below or follow the MVP User Tools link in the forum pages.
