Popup Messages Stop Displaying Over Systray Icons After Acronis Has Run

Thread needs solution

Acronis True Image 2016 build 6571
Win10 Pro (64-Bit)

Hi:

Before Acronis True Image 2016 runs, hovering over the systray icons will popup the message associated with that icon. But after running Acronis True Image 2016, such as for a backup, Win10 no longer shows the popup message over the icon when hovering the mouse pointer over it.

The only solution seems to be to restart the computer and NOT run Acronis.

How can this be fixed so that hovering over the systray icons will continue to show the popup messages during and after Acronis is run?

FYI: I have already cleared the Notification Tray Icon Cache and Reset it, but that does not prevent the disappearing of the popup message when hovering the mouse over the icons after Acronis has been run.

Thanks

I have not seen this problem and have just tested your scenario by running one of my manual backups in ATIH 2016 on my Windows 10 64-bit system and my systray icon pop-ups stayed working all the way through, including showing the status of my ATIH backup task.

It is not a problem I have seen reported in the forums previously so not sure how to advise you further on this, especially as you say you have already cleared the Notification Tray Icon Cache?

Perhaps other users in the forum will add their thoughts.

Like Steve, I have not experienced this on my compter.  I also ran a test and verified that the systray icon popups continue to work.  I also did a google search (which I am sure you did too) and did not find any similar problems...lots of missing icons, but none where the popups stopped.

Unfortunately, I have no recommendations.

Not sure if this is the same thing or not.  However, while a backup is running, try going to the "show taskbar icons" menu and see if the Acronis icon is there.  Then tell it to always show (which will only show it while running anyway though).  I had to do this once with a previous build to get the Acronis icon to show in the taskbar, but again, no sure if this is exactly the same thing or not.

As for other icons in the taskbar, I never have an issue where hovering over the icon doesn't show a popup with info about he icon either.  I can't reproduce this before or after a backup runs.  Perhaps removing the icons and re-adding them with the link above will resolve this behavior on your system though.

I ran the bat file, again. The icons reset. Ran Acronis and as soon as Acronis started backing up, the popups hovering over the icon disappeared. No open windows. Refreshed desktop by pressing F5, still did not return. Only when restarting computer and NOT running Acronis, did the hovering popup messages return.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

What is your Windows setting as mentioned here:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/disable-visual-effects-windows

Under the visual effects tab, has it been set to something other than the top option of "let windows choose what's best"?  How does yours compare to mine (see capture 1 - with checked/unchecked boxes).  What about the "avanced" tab as well.  Is it set to  "programs"   or "background services"?

This may not be Acronis causing the change, but some system and/or registry tweaks implemented directly, or with third party "system performance" tools that are supposed to speed up your computer, but change characteristics in AERO and other default behavior of Windows. You might not notice certain changes on the system until it's pushed a little and then the settings kick in after that.

Alternatively you may try some of the suggestions here:  http://superuser.com/questions/640538/how-to-disable-windows-7-taskbar-hover-list

I've never used taskbartweaker, but it should do what you're looking for and supports Win7-Win10.  Alternatively, there is a suggestion to change the hover time of taskbar icons via the registry too.

Actually, I just came across this thread:  http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5662-notification-area-icons-reset-windows-10-a.html.  Found it from here:  http://www.tenforums.com/general-support/16326-system-tray-tooltips-don…

I think it's more likley to help you out, but still worth checking the settings in the screenshots from my post above to see if you have changed any of the default settings (intentionally or not).

Here's the content of the article (get the bat file from the site).

1. Click/tap on the download button below to download the file below.

Reset_Notification_Area_Icons_Cache.bat

2. Save the .bat file to your desktop.

3. Close and save anything that you are working on before proceeding. The next steps will involve killing explorer and restarting the PC.

4. Run the .bat file.

5. If prompted, click/tap on Run to approve. If you like, you can unblock the .bat file to no longer get the Run (Open File - Security Warning) prompt.

6. Follow the instructions in the command prompt to reset your notification area icons. If you do not restart the PC now, you will need to later to finish resetting your notification area icons. (see screenshots below)

My visual effects is EXACTLY as yours as is the performance settings, too. I made no change.

I'm not using a system performance third party software.

I tried taskbartweaker, but it didn't make any difference.

That .bat file has been run and it did not make a difference for this issue. Icons were reset, computer restarted, Acronis ran at the scheduled time, and then the popup messages stopped appearing when mouse hovered over the systray icons.

As far as changing the registry default time before hover, I don't think that would work here. What I have noticed is when Acronis runs a backup according to the schedule set within Acronis, without manual intervention, as soon as Acronis starts backing up, the hovering ability to display the icon message disappears.

It is as if something is stealing the focus from the mouse so that no popup message will display when hovering over a systray icon.

I'm beginning to think that is where the issue is, something to do with Acronis built-in scheduler when it runs automatically at the pre-set time.

Because, when I manually run that same backup, by pressing the "backup now" button, then those popup messages DO continue to appear when the mouse hovers over the icons, when Acronis is backing up and after Acronis is finished backing up.

So, I think the issue is somehow related to Acronis running the scheduled backup automatically at the pre-set time.

I can't repeat the behavior and you're the first to report it so far (that I'm aware of).  The best I can offer is to submit feedback and a system report through the app.  You could open a support case and pay for techncial support if you don't have a Cloud subscription and are outside of the 30 days.  If it is an Acronis issue, you'd be refunded.  I think this is unique to your system though, but really can't say, but technical support can probably help with more in-depth troubleshooting.

As a test, you could remove your original drive.  Install a replacement and a fresh build of Windows and Acronis and see if the behavior still exists.  Painstaking, but would be a way to truly determine if this is an Acronis behavior or a unique system behavior as a result of running a scheduled taskl.  I have a feeling it will work as expected and imagine it is related to something unique in your OS though.

I won't pay for technical support for this. Acronis can take notice of it here.

From what I have read on other forums, such as tenforum, it appears to be an issue that is randomly fixed in some cases. It also may be a video driver issue with Win10. The computer was recently upgraded from win7 and there was not an issue with Win7. I also completely reinstalled Win10 with a fresh install and the issue was not resolved.

Anyway, thanks for your support.

Up to you - I would at least submit the feedback through the app with a system report and reference this forum in your submission to log it.

Upgrading to Windows 10 is new information that was not identified earlier.

Take my next statements "as you will"...

1) There has never been a single  upgrade that has ever been exactly like the original system

2) Upgrades can and do cause different behavior in the OS and/or applications.  It's not a matter of if, but when.

3) There is no such thing as a perfect OS build either - at some point in time, the OS and/or applications within the OS are going to have trouble or cause trouble - it's the nature of software that is developed by people who are prone to human error.  Older/failing hardware, power surges, heat, deteriorating parts, dust, kids, cats, etc, only speed this up.

As a simple example... I built my system with Win 10 "fresh" and within a few months, ended up with random issues with the Windows App store saying it coudln't open and wanting to select a Windows app to open itself.   Shortly after, no Windows app store apps worked.  Tried every web article and forum recommednation with similar behavior to no avail.  Rebuilt the system very similar to how it was originally built and no more issues since then.  Keep in mind this was originally "fresh" OS install with what I would consider to have been "pristine" in nature and with reliable hardware.

Upgrades compound hidden/unknown issues from the previous version or introduce new ones. They may not be noticeable, or not even present, but at some point in time, every OS install could really use a good "fresh" install to get rid of the internal gremlins.

I don't have an answer or a solution for you, only that my hunch is that the upgrade has introduced this behavior somehow, but can't say why or what.  I'm pretty sure if you built Windows 10 "fresh" and installed Acronis 2016 "fresh" too, this issue would not be there.

Yes, I appreciate your comments. You are right that upgrades often introduce problems where they were not before. The "upgrade" eventually became a complete new install of apps and fresh install of Win10. And that resolved some "upgrade" problems, but this issue with the tray icons began about two months after the "fresh" install. So, too soon to attempt another complete fresh install, at least without knowing what might be causing it.

From what I have read so far, it appears to be a random issue. And, if that is the case, I won't attempt a full fresh reinstall at this time.

Anyway, thanks again for your advice and support.

reio98387, it is not a "bug", it is a "feature". It is inteded behavior that notifications/pop-up messages in the system tray are surpressed if Acronis True Image window is opened.

The idea behind this was to display backup, restore and synchronization statuses in text message form in one place at a time for the end-user. When you do not work with the application, it is system tray notifier that lets you know about tasks statuses. When the main window is opened it is supposed that you can see backup/restore/synchronization statuses there and there is no need for duplicating the same information in the system tray. Of course, system tray icon does not go away, it just does not duplicate text status message that you can observe on the main program screen.
