Possible reason for shutdown

Thread needs solution

I have True Image set to back up at a certain time of night. If that backup is interupted by me shutting down the machine before it's done will it pick up where it left off on the next reboot and if so if I have it set to shutdown after backup will it do that despite the PC being in use?

Dave, if you interrupt a backup by shutting down the system then you would need to restart that backup again from the beginning - you cannot simply resume from the point that the backup got to, and I do not think that the backup would restart automatically on the next reboot because technically it wasn't a missed backup.

If you need your computer to shutdown after performing a backup at night, then select that option in the task settings.

The ATIH 2016 User Guide states:

Computer shutdown

If you know that the backup process you are configuring may take a long time, you may select the Shut down the computer after the backup is complete check box. In this case, you will not have to wait until the operation completion. The program will perform the backup and turn off your computer automatically.

This option is also useful when you schedule your backups. For example, you may want to perform backups every weekday in the evening to save all your work. Schedule the backup and select the check box. After that you may leave your computer when you finish your work knowing that the critical data will be backed up and the computer will be turned off.

The problem is that the True Image process is the one shutting my machine down.

The process C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TrueImageHomeNotify.exe (CHAOS) has initiated the shutdown of computer CHAOS on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Legacy API shutdown
Reason Code: 0x80070000
Shutdown Type: shutdown
Comment:

Dave, what build version of ATIH 2016 are you running here?  Build 6581 is the latest build.

What have you got configured here for your backup task - do you have the option set to Shut down the computer after the backup is complete?

What messages show in the service log for the task that was being performed when the system shuts down or gives the error message.  Download the Log File Viewer app from the link in my signature below to help with checking the logs.

Build 6581 as well. Yes, the option to shut down after complete is set. This is the log from this morning when it shut down.

Dave, thanks for the log file information, this shows that the backup completed successfully - you can ignore the error message for the consolidation action at the end of the log - ATIH no longer does consolidation - this is when automatic cleanup is taking place but Acronis has not changed the terminology used in the logs - the error code is meaningless to anyone except the developers.

Given the fact that the backup was successful, then the code you are seeing just indicates that this is a scheduled shutdown.  See webpage: How do i fix this error 0x80070000 API Shutdown where another user reported a very similar error with the same 0x80070000 code.

The alternative here would be to disable the Shut down the computer after the backup is complete check box and to trigger the shutdown using a Post Command instead.

See webpage: 4 Ways to Set Auto Shutdown in Windows 10 and forum post: 38609: Grover's Alternate method to shutdown computer after backup.

Yeah, it's just weird that the computer shutdown the next morning after I started it up again. Not the first time it's done that.

Same Issue.

It is amazing at how it can never be the fault of the application itself.... according to the people that support the software it always has to be an issue with something that the end user is doing incorrectly and/or there computer.

Acronis should NOT force a shut down of the PC when in the middle of running IMPORTANT operations in other applications.

I bought the latest version of Acronis just about a ten days ago and my fully updated top of the line PC has shut down now several times RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of running other apps. NO WARNING it just shows "System Shut Down" and then my PC turns off.

I did not have time to look into this until just now and here is what event viewer shows:

"The process C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TrueImageHomeNotify.exe (ONEHUNDRED) has initiated the shutdown of computer ONEHUNDRED on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Legacy API shutdown"

I did NOT have this problem until I PURCHASED and installed Acronis!

To Acronis developers: Be more careful when writing your CODE! (Gees.... with all the money that Acronis makes you'd think that they could do some Quality Assurance Testing!)

To Acronis "Fan-Boys" out there: Don't bother replying to this post.... I wont be back to read it. And now that I know it is Acronis that is causing this issue.... I know how to fix it.

Techman101101, welcome to these User Forums (and perhaps goodbye too?)

I personally have never had Acronis shutdown my computer unless I have configured it to do so and have not seen other users reporting this behaviour in these forums over recent months.  This post dates back to last year and was raised for the 2016 version but you say you have just bought the latest 2017 version (10 days ago), so you are entitled to open a Support Case directly with Acronis Support for this issue if you wish to do so.

Note: all users of ATIH 2016 and later now get upto 2 years support from date of purchase, or can ask for a refund within 30 days of purchase.

To get your comments about the code / quality assurance testing to the Acronis developers, then please use the Feedback tool with the ATIH GUI - this is a user forum and I doubt that the developers visit often enough to pick up this topic.
