Problems with rescue media and Microsoft Surface 3 (not pro)
Hi,
I have recently bought a 5 computer licence for Acronis 2016. (I have used 2013 for some years)
I have installed the program on 5 computers without any problems. All running Windows 10.
I have also made and checked rescue media on 4 computers.
But on computer 5, a Microsoft Surface 3, not the PRO, I have problems with the rescue media, USB stick.
I can boot the Surface with the stick, but I can't navigate in the Acronis program. Neither with keyboard nor mouse or touch.
I have the original keyboard for Surface 3, the keyboard has a mouse pad.
The USB stick works okay on the other 4 computers.
I then made a WINPE- based USB stick after installing the software from the links in Acronis 2016.
When I boot with this stick I get several error messages. I couldn't make a screenshot, so I wrote down manually:
(And thus not completely correct to the letter)
"
Your computer must be repaired
Error 0xc0000248
Digital signature could not be verified
File Windows\system32\snapman.sys
"
When I do a normal start of the Surface 3 everything is okay.
After some googling I discovered, that snapman.sys seems to be an Acronis file.
I then made a Windows recovery USB, and it works okay, but will require an all new installation of Windows. Something I would like to avoid, and that is the main reason I bought Acronis.
The Acronis is build 5634, the latest build as of this writing.
Any help will be appreciated.

Svenlind,
I can confirm your problem. It seems that True Image 2016 does not support Microsoft surface 3. (not talking about PRO 3)
Today I bought 2016 and made a bootable USB drive. This is always the first thing I do just to be sure that on a damaged computer I can restore the image from an external disk.
The program starts reading devices but will not recognize any harddisks (not the C-drive, nor the external hard disk). Finally one can see a working screen but freezed. No action can be made.
I tested the USB drive on a normal desktop PC, everything works fine there.
I would like to receive an answer from where I can get information whether Acronis definitely supports surface 3 or not. In case not, I will immediately give back the software to the seller.

Hello Reinhart,
I finally got it working, with help from Acronis support.
Here is the somewhat complicated procedure.
I suppose you have made an USB stick with a WinPE boot image.
If you have made one, then try making it again, but this time have your external harddisk ,the USB mouse and the USB stick connected to your Surface via the hub, while you create the USB boot stick.
I think that this will make the system detect all relevant devices. But it IS a hunch.
Then make an Acronis image of your Surface system. (You probably already have made one)
Just to be sure, you can boot your Surface in 2 ways:
1: Volume UP (VOLUP): From Power down, press volume UP then the Power on button.
2: Volume Down (VDOWN): From Power down, press volume DOWN then the Power on button.
When you want to do a restore then it is like this:
1. Connect all relevant devices via the USB hub.
2. Do a VOLUP boot. Turn off "Secure Boot" in the UEFI interface. Save and exit. Then power down.
3. Do a WDOWN boot.
4. You should now be able to do a recover. I dared do this, and it worked.
You should then do VOLUP boot and turn on "Secure Boot" again.

Svenlind,
thank you for your suggestions. Now I guess what's going on there:
What I did: I created a bootable USB drive (stick) on my desktop PC with the new ATI 2016 installed. In order to test the procedure on my surface, I used this stick. And I got the errors.
Most probably Acronis will make sure that you installed ATI on the surface with a valid licence. In this case you can only produce a functioning USB drive with running ATI on the surface.
I would like to go the other way: First make sure that the system is running and then buy a second licence. This will not work, as we can see now.
But now I know how it works.

I have the exact problem as Svenlind and I have a new Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10 and True Image 2016.
On my MS Surface Ppr 3 I also have problems with the rescue media, USB stick.
I can boot the Surface with the stick, but I can't navigate in the Acronis program. Neither with keyboard nor mouse or touch.
I have the original keyboard for Surface Pro3, the keyboard has a mouse pad.
I then made a WINPE- based USB stick after installing the software from the links in Acronis 2016.
When I boot with this stick I get one SBOD error message. I couldn't make a screenshot, so I wrote down manually:
Your computer must be repaired
Error 0xc0000248
Digital signature could not be verified
File Windows\system32\snapman.sys
"
When I do a normal start of the Surface Pro 3 everything is okay.

You need to disable Secure Boot. That will fix the signature problem.

Elegant and simple solution. I can now boot with the WINPE- based USB stick into the Acronis recovery system and access my backup. The Acronis Bootable Rescue Media USB stick choice still yields a frozen screen after entry but the WinPE based Media with Acronis Plug-In USB stick works so I can certainly live with that. Thanks.

@Svenlind
In your last posting you mentioned th winPE boot image. I would prefer to create the acronis backup/restore directly on the USB stick. Is there any reason for taking the winPE?
I mean your choice will take a lot of harddisk space, and we know the surface hasn't got plenty of space.

You can reclaim the used space, when you have made the winPE based stick.

@svenlind,
I still need your help. In order to create the WINPE based bootable medium, I downloaded and installed on my surface
- Acronis rescue media builder
- Windows assessment and deployment kit ADK (file: adksetup)
But when I start the A. rescue builder it tells me I still have to install the Windows AIK or ADK. I can not continue.
What did you do?
