Recovering a backup

I bought Acronis because I wanted backup and recovery software where I did not need a CIS degree to use it. I bought Acronis because when I tried to restore a backup using Windows Backup it failed to read my backup drive after a system failure and a system reformat. Oddly enough, I find myself in the exact same position with True image 2016. My system went down and I had to reformat the hard drive to the factory condition. I reinstalled Acronis but low and behold, the software fails to be able to locate the drive where the backup is located. If I would have known that this software would have been just tricky to navigate and use as Windows Backup, I would have the saved the money. Is there a way to get to the backup from a clean OS install?
