Recovering information from a Win 7 Backup

Thread needs solution

Folks:

Based on what I've found in Google, I am one of the hundreds of Win7 users with  System Image files that the Restore function can't see,

One solution I found was  " you can use Acronis True Image Home 2012 to recover a Windows System Image" I ended up with the 2016 version. I'm having no luck.

Might someone walk me through the process?  I am a complete newbie with Acronis. I've used MS Backup and Restore in the past.

If it's not an imposition would you E-mail me if a solution is posted? lloyd.jamieson@sympatico.ca

Thanks in advance

Lloyd, unfortunately the support in Acronis True Image Home for Microsoft Virtual Hard Disks (.VHD or .VHDX) files was withdrawn from later versions of the product, so is not included with the current ATIH 2016 software.

In KB document: 48326: Acronis True Image 2015: FAQ you can read:

Features

I’m missing some features available in previous Acronis True Image versions. Where can I find them?

To lighten the product and to make it more reliable, the following tools were removed:

  • Acronis Extended Capacity Manager
  • Trim SSD
  • Backup file conversion from the .tib format to .vhd, and vice versa
  • Disk Editor

An earlier KB document: 3648: Restoring Windows 7 VHD Backup Files with Acronis True Image Home which was written for the ATIH 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014 products will take you through the limitations of working with Windows backup images, in particular the statement at the top of this document:

To restore your system from Windows 7 Backup, you need to restore the whole disk where the system partition is

This suggests that you would have to have a spare hard disk drive to restore the backup image to if you could obtain a copy of one of these obsolete Acronis products.

A search on Google for "How to mount VHD image" gives a number of options but these assume that you can see the VHD file in order to attach it and view the contents.

Hi folks.  If you have a .vhd file (Windows 7 backup)  Acronis should still be able to restore it using the offline recovery media. Unfortunatley, .vhdx files (Win 8 and newer) are not supported with Acronis.

This may come in handy as well.  Check out the post from Bruno with a slick trick in Windows 10 to create a VHD to import into other virtual appications as well.
