Recovery failing with Acronis True Image 2016

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I would like to know if somebody knows how to resolve my recovery failing problema. I'm currently using Windows 10 and Acronis 2016. When I try to restore my PC to a previous date, Acronis asks me restart my computer, what I did several times, but nothing. When I click on "Cancel", Acronis cancels the action.

Thank you for helping me.

David, welcome to these User Forums.

From your problem description, it sounds likely that you are attempting to restore your PC from within the Windows ATI application.  When you do this, it will always require a restart in order to launch a standalone Linux OS environment from which to perform the restore fully outside of Windows.

It sounds as if your PC does not like booting from the temporary Linux OS - this can be caused by having a UEFI system with Secure Boot enabled.

The recommended method of doing this type of recovery / restore is to use the separate Acronis bootable Rescue Media and start the PC from this media.

The default rescue media is also Linux based, so if the PC cannot boot from this, it will show up very quickly.  ATI can also create Windows PE Rescue Media but will require that you install the Windows 10 ADK in order to do so -this is a large download of around 3-5GB in size, and you will be taken to the Microsoft download site if you select to make this type of media in the Acronis Rescue Media Builder tool.

One note: the Rescue Media needs to be booted using the same method used by your Windows 10 OS, i.e. both using UEFI or both using Legacy BIOS boot methods.

See webpage: BIOS Mode - See if Windows Boot in UEFI or Legacy Mode for how to check what mode is used for booting.

See KB 56610: Acronis True Image 2016: Creating Bootable Media where the screen shot in step 3. shows the 2 different options for creating the media, where the default is Linux based, and the lower option is for the WinPE media.
