Resize partition

Thread needs solution

Hi team,

I made an image of a PC with Windows XP. It had only one partition. The size of the HD is about 150 GB, and so is the .tib file. The actual free space on the HD is about 130 GB (so only about 20 GB used). I want to restore it into a smaller HD (about 40 GB), so I need to make the size of the image file smaller.

How can I do that?

Thank you

Pablo, welcome to these User Forums.

If the size of your backup .tib file is around 150GB then I am sorry but there is no way that you can reduce the size of this.

The most likely reason why the .tib file is the same size as the original disk drive is that the backup file was created using Sector-by-Sector mode, which means that the whole disk drive was imaged, including empty sectors.

The options that you have at this point would be as follows:

  1. If you still have the original source Win XP drive available, then make a new backup without using Sector-by-Sector which should produce a .tib file much less than 20GB in size.
  2. If you no longer have the original source drive, then you will need to restore the .tib file to a temporary disk drive of 150GB in size or larger, then make a new backup .tib file of that drive.
Note: If taking this approach, I would recommend using a tool such as the free MiniTool Partition Wizard to shrink the restored 150GB drive partition down to your target drive size of say 40GB, then make the new backup image so that you can later restore this to your smaller drive.
