Restore does not work- Drives non-bootable.

Hi guys,

 

I got Acronis with my SCAN PC pre-installed and I have been running frequent backups to a separate hard drive. 

It seems I had a corruption in Windows  and I had to roll back to another date. Problem was I couldn't login to Windows but I was lucky enough to have a cloned hard drive of the system.

So I logged in using that hard drive, accessed my Acronis backups which are intact and set it to restore the system to another hard drive using the back up. 

So Windows restarted and Acronis did the usual procedure of restoring to the hard drive.

No here's the problem: 

After this happened the hard drive created by the Acronis backup is not bootable and the original hard drive is not bootable either!

At this point I am kind of lost as I understand if the restore didn't work but why would my original hard drive not be bootable?

 

Any help is highly appreciated.

When you say the drives are not bootable how so?  Do you see any error message?  Is the non boot the same with both drives?  Define original hard drive, do you mean the original drive with the corrupted Windows install?  Have you checked your bios to make sure the PC is attempting to boot from the correct drive?  Did you  remove the source drive (the drive you cloned from) prior to attempting to boot to the new drive?

indeed, I get this message :

MBR Error 3 

BOOTMGR is missing

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I tried both with the cloned hard drive and the restored hard drive each time booting from the correct hard drive through BIOS.

I double checked and Acronis indeed restored the hard drive (all files are there) but it didn't make the hard drive bootable and the cloned hard drive that used to work is rendered non bootable as well.

any ideas?

I'm not sure what version of Windows you are using and what your hardware set up was, but: –
When you install Windows and have more than one drive present on your PC, under certain conditions, Windows places the boot partition on the second (non-OS) drive. You notice nothing when running the PC, however the absence of the second drive would cause the same problem you are having right now.
If you have/had a second drive on your PC, make sure it is still present and retry.
For those users that have a similar set up, you can move this partition back to your C drive (Google it) or post here for help.

You could also try to fix the startup using your windows install media.  Select troubleshooting then startup repair.

Are both drives still in your computer?  Windows can't handle 2 identical drives.  If both drives are still in the computer, disable one in BIOS or remove one.
